I'm on antibiotics and I hate them. How do you cope with the side effects?

Many years ago I had a stomach ulcer and had to take a cocktail of antibiotics for 6 weeks. Since then every time I take them, I get thrush, stomach problems, nasty medicine taste in my mouth, mouth dryness and general feelings of bleugh.Envy

What can I do to avoid/mitigate this while I get better? It's my birthday this weekend and I'm going out for the first time in ages. I just want to enjoy it or at least not feel totally shite.Sad

The only way I get through is finding myself it's a short period, though admittedly the side effects aren't as bad as yours. Hopefully someone will be along with something more useful!

Take some probiotics ( usually a yoghurt or drink) to help rebalance your stomach , that should help a little bit

Thank you. I have some Biome, maybe that will help?

I find that drinking loads of water helps, and I try and avoid too much sugar while on them or I end up with thrush. I think it depends on the antibiotic, I've had erythromycin and metronidazole in the past and they are evil. I'm currently on my 4th week of Flucloxacillin and they don't seem to have many effects on me, apart from making my wee smell.

I need a lot of antibiotics. Really makes a difference to take probiotics: not the yoghurt drinks, but the capsules with a much higher dose.

AornisHades · 01/03/2019 00:51

What is it? There are some that taking with a glass of milk helps.

SurgeHopper · 01/03/2019 01:28

You need natural yogurt, totally plain yog, no sugar etc added. Eat it. It'll settle your gut bacteria.

If they're making you sick/dizzy ask the dr for a script for cyclizine.
