Possibility of Heparin side effects - any experience

DD 16yo has been taking Heparin injections for past two weeks due to her lower leg being in a cast.

Tonight she is complaining of pains everywhere, a 'cold' pain in her arms and chest, back pain and sore throat and I now hear her coughing. It has come on suddenly, she was fine up to about 2 hours ago,

Should I be worried ? wondering if it is the start of the flu or a potential side effect from the Heparin Injections. Not in UK, so don't have the 101 number to call.

I’d be very concerned about pulmonary embolism. Heparin is not a guarantee of no clots. Call 111 if you are in the uk. Or possibly go to a&e.

Sorry, saw you are not uk. Emergency department at hospital then.

I had heparin injections for two weeks - suffered from kidney bleeding from them. Not pleasant!

Thank you for the response, she has fallen asleep now, will keep an eye on her through the night.

She needs to be seen.
Is she on any other medication? In particular anything hormonal?
The dose of heparin has to be calculated appropriately and doesn't eliminate all risk.
PE is potentially fatal. Much better to get assessed early.

I'd wake her and take her straight to the ER

I would also wake her and take to a&e

Any news?

Thanks for asking and thanks for the support.

She wanted to wait a bit longer before going to A&E, she was waking and falling back asleep. Nurse friend popped in to double check and having seen her felt we could wait and see for a few more hours overnight.

She vomited several times this morning, had a 39 C fever, felt dizzy. then just as suddenly she felt better, pains are gone, now feeling a bit weak but has has had soup and toast and kept it down.

Looks dreadfully pale, thinks it a virus, will go to Dr. tomorrow if she is not feeling better.

Gad she's feeling better. But obviously please keep an eye (I know that sounds patronising!) glad she's feeling better though!

*glad

Just a little update, turns out she had Glandular Fever / Mono. Sore throat and flu like symptoms lasted about 2 weeks, but she is better now, just exhausted all the time.
