Which book do you love reading to your children?

Mine is Peace at Last. I love the sound effects and the fact that my one year old DD joins in with the repeated bits. I love the illustrations. I remember having it read to me as a child.

It made me wonder which books others enjoy reading to their children and why?

Mine are mostly grown up now but I loved Dogger; such a kind book. Also anything by Julia Donaldson ; we loved a good rhyme.

When they got a bit older we were particular fans of the Moomins.

And I actually read all of the a Harry Potters aloud to them over the years.

Lovely memories.

It was Room on the Broom, but it has been ds3's obsession of late and ha ing read it every night for three weeks I am sick of it!

McDougal · 02/03/2019 17:21

I love reading 'Oh the places you'll go' by Dr Seuss to DD. It's just such a lovely message of trying your best but being realistic that sometimes things won't go your way and it's okay to fail sometimes.

I work with Reception children so am enjoying some of the books I read with DD over again. Julia Donaldson is a favourite, particularly Room on the Broom, Stick Man and A Squash and a Squeeze. Not so keen on The Snail and the Whale - it doesn't flow as well to me. Also lots of Dr Seuss, The Cat in the Hat, Green Eggs and Ham, Fox in Socks.

OP I came on to post Peace at Last!! "Oh no, I can't stand this!" has become a catchphrase in our house.

I also love The Jolly Postman and The Paper Dolls, although I get teary when they go to her memory and see her Granny.

seaweedhead · 02/03/2019 18:44

I love reading funny picture with good rhymes. A bed of Your Own and Shifty McGifty and Slippery Sam are good fun.

SparkiePolastri · 02/03/2019 18:59

The giant jam sandwich- a childhood favourite of mine which I also imparted on my children

One hot summer in Itching Down!

Loved this as a child. DS went as the Baker for his first book day.

SparkiePolastri · 02/03/2019 19:00

We went through a period of reading Dogger night after night. ❤️

BabloHoney · 02/03/2019 19:02

Lost and Found 💙 and all the Oliver Jeffers books. Here We Are is lovely too.

NerrSnerr · 02/03/2019 19:16

I love Monkey Puzzle, my daughter chooses it sometimes as she knows it's my favourite.

Giraffes Can''t Dance

I will always remember DS coming out of nursery and excitedly telling me the whole plot of The Snail and the Whale while we were walking home. He was very taken with the clever snail writing on the board.

We used to riff on Room on the Broom all the time too: “Is there room in the car for a boy like me? Yes said the mummy so the boy climbed on. The mummy turned the car on and whoosh they were gone.”

Ha ha, he’s 12 now and far too cool for his old mum.

Alphonse, That Is Not Okay To Do by Daisy Hirst - it was one of the Cbeebies bedtime stories read by Matt Berry, and it's so funny that I bought it; it's now a favourite.

A Bit Lost by Chris Houghton - it's fun to do the voices, and it's mercifully short (so good for bedtime).

The Gruffalo - I can do this one from memory.

raffle · 04/03/2019 11:31

Any Hairy Maclairy stories. We love them!

Ratonastick · 04/03/2019 11:39

Six Dinner Sid
Saturday Night at the Dinosaur Stomp
Gruffalo

And when DS got older, we loved Ronald Dahl. Especially James and the Giant Peach and Fantastic Mr Fox. There was also a book called the Secrets of Nimh about escaped lab rats who were super intelligent which was great. And I caught my hulking, nearly 16 year old rereading a couple of months ago.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 04/03/2019 13:14

Latest I enjoy reading to Gdcs is The Last Noo Noo (Jill Murphy) about the little monster whose mummy and granny monsters think it's high time he gave up his noo noo (dummy).

GDcs have never had noo noos, so that's not the purpose - it's just very funny.

Shufflebumnessie · 04/03/2019 13:35

Bear snores on is one of my favourites to read. Also, the dinosaur that pooped books as DS finds them hilarious and his laughing makes me laugh too.

Ohyesiam · 04/03/2019 13:38

I loved all the Julia Donaldson ones, but Smartest Giant in Town was my favourite.
I made up a great tune to the repeated rhyme , which my husband always got wrong causing dd to tell him off!

Thebookswereherfriends · 04/03/2019 13:48

Brambly hedge is lovely. Dd and I love the stories and looking at the gorgeous pictures together.

CoodleMoodle · 04/03/2019 13:54
  • All of the Mog books (except Goodbye Mog, I can't read that!)
  • All of the Hairy McClary books, especially Scarface Claw
  • My Big Shouting Day because it's so funny and true (it's also our favourite Cbeebies bedtime story, I've watched it on my own more than once Grin)
  • Once There Were Giants, makes me all emotional!
  • Oi Frog/Dog/Cat
  • The Faraway Tree series, which we're currently reading
3in4years · 04/03/2019 13:58

You're all my favourites.

PeachRose · 04/03/2019 13:58

I came on here to post "Peace at Last" and saw it on the OP. It's a favourite book in our house 😊
