Which book do you love reading to your children?

Mine is Peace at Last. I love the sound effects and the fact that my one year old DD joins in with the repeated bits. I love the illustrations. I remember having it read to me as a child.

It made me wonder which books others enjoy reading to their children and why?

The "Oi" books by Kes Gray, most Julia Donaldson, especially Superworm and Zog, You Choose (DH hates it!).

GroggyLegs · 26/02/2019 22:04

I love the Acorn Wood series & I'm sorry my DC are nearly too old for them now. I'm going to keep them for any GC I may have Grin

I do not love reading factual books about dinosaurs, not even ones with flaps.

MrsPussinBoots · 26/02/2019 22:05

Little Grey Rabbit and the Weasels. I loved it as a child and love it now.

Oh now I do love a factual book about dinosaurs! I'm more enthusiastic about lifting all the flaps than DD!

When DD was small she loved The Night Pirates and I’d have to do my best pirate voice for when the pirate captain yelled ‘If you don’t give me my treasure back, I’ll tell my mum!”

EssentialHummus · 26/02/2019 22:07

Toddle Waddle. If we ever return it to the library DD picks it straight back up again!

BlueDotty · 26/02/2019 22:07

Now it's Famous Five but my fave used to be The Gruffalo and The Monkey Puzzle.

Summerisdone · 26/02/2019 22:07

I like reading all the Julia Donaldson books to DS, I think my fave is The Smartest Giant In Town though.
I also love We're Going On A Bear Hunt, but I don't think I've actually even opened that book since he was a few months old (now 4 years), I just recite the story to him when walking to and from nursery most days, as I memorised it from reading it so often to my younger siblings 16 and 12 years ago Grin

Xiaoxiong · 26/02/2019 22:12

We were given a copy of Old Possum's book of practical cats by tS Eliot illustrated by Axel whatisface who does all the Julia Donaldson books and it's currently our absolute favourite - such a pleasure to read aloud, though I have to make my accent sort of 1930s BBC posh to make some of the rhymes work!

BathshebaKnickerStickers · 26/02/2019 22:14

Actually my absolutely favourite books are “ Daisy, Eat Your Peas” and “Tom And The Tinful Of Trouble” (which i’ve also seen called “The Time It Took Tom”)

SnugglySnerd · 26/02/2019 22:19

We recently had "Daisy, eat your peas" from the library and we all loved it. Currently enjoying "Not now, Bernard" from the library.

I love the Ahlbergs' books too, they bring back such happy childhood memories for me. My 2 year old DS loves them too, especially "Peepo Baby " as he calls it and Each Peach Pear Plum. He has great fun finding the characters in the illustrations.

DrWhy · 26/02/2019 22:22

Each Peach Pear Plum, DS can recite most of it now as he turns the pages, very cute. Also Peepo, 10 little dinosaurs, The Snail and the Whale, Room on the Broom and What the Ladybird Heard. I love catching DS chatting away to himself and reciting bits of them while he’s working on a puzzle or building duplo or something. Generally anything with a nice rhyming patterns and bonus points for a good story and illustrations.

magimedi · 26/02/2019 22:24

As a grandmother, it has to be Dinosaur Roar! We have all the noises & the gestures!

Madmarchpear · 26/02/2019 22:27

Another vote for Peepo. The loaded image of the 40s dad in army uniform at the end chokes me everytime.
Also, of thee I sing by barrack obama. My dd reads the have I told you... line with such exaggerated reverence to make me laugh.

The giant jam sandwich- a childhood favourite of mine which I also imparted on my children Smile

I love my mummy

I don’t understand Bear Hunt...is it real? Is it a game? It just befuddles me. And some of the words just don’t read well in rhythm for me either.
I love to read Dogger. I nearly cry when Bella swaps the bear for dogger (spoiler alert!). I also love to read “Monkey Puzzle” especially to a group of children, was a firm fav at my former work. “Funnybones” and the Jolly Postman series are good too.
Christmas books are also lovely as I’ve read them to my children across the years and it’s a special thing to do at a special time of year.

Lemoncakestrudel · 26/02/2019 23:15

The book with no pictures is a great one. I always wonder if my neighbours can hear the wierd sounds I have to make.

poppy2021 · 26/02/2019 23:25

Za-Za's baby brother by Lucy Cousins. I think I read it every night for around 2 years. And heaven help me if I missed a word far less a page. And Hairy Mclairy from Donaldsons dairy by Lynley Dodd. Rhyming and easy to read.
Mine are grown up now and I miss those precious moments Smile

implantsandaDyson · 26/02/2019 23:37

My kids loved Owl Babies - I used to change the names of the owl babies to theirs. It always makes me smile when I see it on my youngest shelf and she's 8 Grin.
Dear Zoo was also much loved and Father Christmas needs a wee.

The Pig in the Pond & Beaver and the Echo

Artykitty666 · 27/02/2019 00:00

As a teacher, the owl who was afraid of the dark. They howl every time he falls off the branch. Also the twits. I replace the four boys with the names of four children in my class. It's brilliant as they have to slide out of their trousers in their pants! My class were beside themselves!!

Artykitty666 · 27/02/2019 00:06

I should say because they naughtily climb a tree Mr twit has covered with extra strong glue to catch birds for his bird pie. The boys sit on it but realise only their trousers are glued so concoct a funny plan to escape.
