Which book do you love reading to your children?

Mine is Peace at Last. I love the sound effects and the fact that my one year old DD joins in with the repeated bits. I love the illustrations. I remember having it read to me as a child.

It made me wonder which books others enjoy reading to their children and why?

I loved reading The Hobbit to my dds. It was lovely helping them solve the riddles.

SnugglySnerd · 27/02/2019 06:48

Wellthatsjustgreat The Giant Jam Sandwich was one of my childhood favourites and my mum bought it me for Christmas last year so I can read it to my kids. They love it too.

I loved reading The Mousehole Cat. But I had to prepare myself carefully otherwise I tear up at the ending. I tried to avoid the stares and "Why are you crying, mummy?"

I also enjoyed reading the Milly-Molly-Mandy stories - everyone in them is so completely nice.

These days it's Harry Potter and Enid Blyton's Barney mysteries.

OTOH, I renamed it We're Going on a Sodding Bear Hunt. I never enjoyed reading it even though they loved it.
Also, I hated The Tale of Samuel Whiskers - it terrified me as a child and I believe my rat phobia can be traced back to that story. Unfortunately it was DD2's favourite for a time and she asked for it every night for months.

Stick Man - I never understand why people get sick of this one, I love it :o

Bear Hunt too yes.

The Very Hungry Caterpillar

Green Eggs and Ham

I love books with a rhythm.

Witchend · 27/02/2019 07:38

I was going to say Lone Pine Series and Swish of the Curtain series, but they are older.
When smaller, Night Pirates and Shark in the Park.
Ds does still like the Whisperer, a cat version of Romeo and Juliet.

Paper Dolls, it has lovely meaning ♥️ When i'm a mummy like you is also really sweet and brings a tear to my eye. Apart from that I love Stick Man, Tiger That Came To Tea and the 10 range of books 🙂

happinessischocolate · 27/02/2019 20:52

Duck in a truck, bear hunt, gruffalo and bear in a big blue house

My kids are 17 and 15 though so it's been awhile 😂😂

MsMustDoBetter · 27/02/2019 20:53

So many of these!

But I do like Little One's Bedtime. The little girl in the illustrations lols like DD, so she thinks it's about her.

Slinky Malinki Catflaps by Lynsey Dodd is another favourite.

My granddaughters stayed with us last week and we started reading Anne of Green Gables between us, me reading a bit and then both of them taking turns, we only managed 3 chapters as each night what we were reading there were many discussions due to the differing times and circumstances. I've kept the book here so we can resume the story when they come to stay again.

It's been a thing for me that all grandchildren get a copy of Each Peach, Pear, Plum as I remember my children having the book and especially my son looking through it and saying I spy the errr errr hunting man,, (Robin Hood) the same son who has become a father today. Guess what one of the presents will be 😁

Peepo, it makes me a bit weepy, one of the first books I read to my much longed for DS. DD is 4 and will still listen to it but it's only a matter of time.
I love Dogger but the DCs don't.

autumnboys · 27/02/2019 22:06

I loved almost all of Julia Donaldson’s stuff.

DS3 has ASD, he is 9. I still read to him. We have covered all the Narnia Chronicles, the How to Train your Dragon series & most of Percy Jackson. We’ve just finished The Boy who Grew/Lived with/Flew With Dragons - that was a good series. We’ve read Nevermoor & now we’re on Wundersmith. We have Cressida Cowell’s Wizards of Once sequel after this. It has been really good for him - I do believe a love of literacy is caught, not taught.

DelurkingAJ · 27/02/2019 22:06

The Elephant and the Bad Baby
You Choose
Please Mrs Butler (a slightly surprising charity shop hit with DS1 (6) although I adored it when small)
Zog

I used to adore our Thomas the Tank Emgine collection. I have read them on rotation for the last six months. DS2 will not let DH read to him. I can practically recite them and DS2 (nearly 3) reminds me of the key highlights of each story before we start in case I’d forgotten (e.g. ‘Henry naughty in tunnel, Mummy’). Argh!

We have so many favourites

Going on a bear hunt

Little Rabbit Foo Foo (possibly our number 1)

Presently reading Hairy Mclairy

We love Supertato, The Gruffalo, The Mouse and the Moon too

HarrySnotter · 27/02/2019 22:46

The Dancing Tiger by Malachy Doyle. Never have been able to get to the end of it without a catch in my throat.

BigFishy · 02/03/2019 13:45

I like Hog in the Fog by Julia Copus

greyspottedgoose · 02/03/2019 14:08

All the dinosaur pooed books 🙊🙊

MyPatronusIsAnOrca · 02/03/2019 14:22

Stick man -luckily DS loves it too so we read that a lot.

And I’m not sure why but “Aliens love underpants” makes me feel all warm inside and I love reading it to DS!

discodancersweetromancer · 02/03/2019 14:28

On The Night You Were Born. The last sentence chokes me up every time.

ThatLibraryMiss · 02/03/2019 16:37

Nice to see the love for Lynley Dodd's Hairy Maclary series. They come up as a set on The Book People from time to time at a very good price.

Someone has mentioned The Mousehole Cat by Antonia Barber - my favourite book to read aloud, and the illustrations are beautiful.

People who like old-fashioned authors like Shirley Hughes might also like The Children of Green Knowe by Lucy Boston. It's a lovely gentle ghost story, not at all frightening or creepy - the children who died just loved the (real) house they lived in so much that they never left.

The one that makes me tear up is No Matter What by Debi Gliori.

Whatthefunk · 02/03/2019 17:09

My Ds was obsessed with bodily functions, and loved, the little mole, who knew it was none of his business and 5he great dog bottom swap Smile
