What did you use to love as a child that you can't see the attraction of now?

I was looking back to when I was a teenager on a school trip to the Barbican to see, I forget, probably The Importance of being Ernest. And before it started a group of us had a grand old time riding the lifts. Confused A friend of mine who used to bunk off lessons regularly would find it great fun to hide under the stage during assembly. Why??? It was dark, damp and full of creepy crawlies. She shakes her head and laughs at herself now.

I also tried a cough candy the other day (which I used to love on the rare occasions I had them). I couldn't finish it. Too much sugar in one go (probably just as well).

Anyone else want to share their remembered pleasures which turn out to be a bit meh, or 'WTF was all that about?' as an adult?

The Gnome Mobile. I watched this film loads as a child; saw it was on recently and rewatched it. It is so hideously sexist, it got past even my low sensibilities on that score.

Fairground rides, but I need to get some balls back as the DC are coming up to the age where they love them.

hazandduck · 26/02/2019 23:15

Ugh yes to fairground rides, particularly the waltzers - bleugh! Just watching them turns my stomach now.

Supernoodles - again, bleugh! I used to mix Nice and Spicy Nik Nak’s in to them!? Ew.

Agree that the sims doesn't work on consoles. It's totally addictive on PC when you are building your dream house and bricking in beloved friends.

Taking off during a flight
Most fair rides
Soap operas
Wagon wheels and penguins
Only fools and horses / Tales of the unexpected

Bravelurker · 26/02/2019 23:29

Just thought of another one - Blackpool

RomanticFatigue · 26/02/2019 23:46

Reading. Sadly.
Fairground rides here too.
My sister.

Flying. I hate it the more I travel despite only suffering turbulence a few times in my life. And I didn’t even find that particularly scary.

Pets. I thought I’d be taking in all strays but I’ve got 2 quite undemanding animals (goldfish and lizard) but a dog or cat? No thanks.

Sweet things like party rings as previously mentioned. I never bother with chocolate or puddings either now.

Point Horror and Sweet Valley High books. Used to love these but after collecting a fair amount from charity shops for my dc, I’ve re-read about 2 from my new collection and they are absolutely shit (but would love to come across some Making Out books Blush).

Magazines in general. Used to buy lots but I begrudge dp even paying for newspapers these days as it’s all online for free.

Sabrina the Teenage Witch - I watched some repeats of it, on one of the channels, over Christmas. It was awful.

Also, don't like a lot of Disney films now.

DorothyZbornak · 27/02/2019 11:01

McDonalds. Took my friend's DD (4) there recently and got a chicken sandwich meal. It just tasted like slightly flavoured cardboard and the coke was so watered down it was more like drinking fizzy water with ice. Bleurgh!

Elflocks · 27/02/2019 11:10

Also, having read the whole thread, I have to agree with snow and board games.

Elflocks · 27/02/2019 11:13

Fireworks as well, so dangerous.

The Sims has always been absolutely crap on consoles. And Sims 4 is an appalling game. The graphics are good but I found it too babyish and like it was telling you exactly what you had to do.

I play the Sims 2. By far the best game.

Swinging (on a swing, not the other kind). Used to love it when I was younger and even played the "swing really high and see who can jump the furthest game". Went on one last year and after a certain height started to get really dizzy and panicky that I was going to fall.

Also rollercoasters and fairground rides. I would not go on one now.

MissionItsPossible · 27/02/2019 14:11

@Elflocks

If the channel Sabrina was playing on was 4music, that's because they are only airing the dreadful Seasons 5 - 7 when everyone knows the best ones are 1-3!

Elflocks · 27/02/2019 20:29

That would explain it then, MissionItsPossible! Smile
