I've got a dentist appt booked this week as I've been getting some pain on my top tooth, the furthest one back. Over the few days it's gone worse and I've been trying to have a look in the mirror but couldn't figure it out until today I managed to see that there is a hole on my tooth sort of near the gum.

What does this mean? Will I need it extracting?! Im so scared of the dentist as it is and am really upset and scared.

They'll fill it if they can. Don't worry.

I've had a filling but that was on the chewing surface of the teeth. There was never a hole. I can actually feel it when I put my finger there.

As marvellous said it will be filled Smile

I've been googling and have panicked myself that I might need a root canal. I'll just have to wait and see.

I've had a little hole in the side of a back tooth before, it was a 4"5 minute job to fill it. I didn't even need anaesthetic as it hadn't got to the nerve with it being at the side.

Try not to panic I'm sure they don't extract unless it's pretty dire Thanks

I have had fillings come out on several occasions and the hole left always feels massive but they have usually been able to fill them again. On two of my molars I now have crowns because they were beyond being filled. I have never had them removed or had root canal treatment. I am sure yours will be able to be filled.

holkein · 26/02/2019 12:33

cricketmum84 how do you know if it's got to the nerve?

A root canal is effectively just a big filling. If the majority of the tooth is ok, a decent dentist will try and salvage the tooth.

Beamur · 26/02/2019 12:35

You would know if the nerve was exposed or infected. Lots of pain and swelling.

cricketmum84 · 26/02/2019 13:28

I'm not sure to be honest! I presume from the depth of the hole, I think he stuck his pointy thing in it (nudge wink) and it didn't hurt so he said it wasn't down to the nerve yet.

It’ll be filled. I got a new fancy type of filling last week. It’s ‘tooth coloured’ love that the dentist used those words and is an ‘adhesive’ filling rather than amalgam so needs less drilling. It wasn’t available via nhs so cost £80. My filling had most broken away. Dentist will try to save any teeth possible.

holkein · 28/02/2019 11:47

My appt is in 20 mins. I am absolutely shitting it I fucking hate the dentist. I feel like they're judging my shit teeth and rolling their eyes. My DM had a dentist phobia and didn't let me go as a child. I think it's rubbed off on me.
