I'm watching an American TV show and a character has just become an 'ordained minister' so they can perform a marriage (I think Joey in Friends did it as well

Is that really legal? does it really happen?

Yes. Google it!
Was it Scandal? 😂

Yep. Luke Skywalker married Amy and Sheldon in Big Bang

He even said “by the powers invested in me by evenyoucanperformweddings.com (spoof site set up by the producers) I now pronounce you husband and wife”

You can be ordained online for weddings in California, for example the Universal Life Church. I am the Reverend Brahambug and have been for 10 years!

I got married this way! Totally legal. So bizarre but it’s true.

barkingfly · 25/02/2019 04:33

The last wedding I went to was officiated by a morning DJ, so, yes, anyone can do it.

BartonHollow · 25/02/2019 04:46

Yes you can!

In the States at least

You can apply for a specific licence too

longwayoff · 25/02/2019 07:01

Benedict Cumberbatch has one of these, I believe, and had the honour of marrying Judge Rinder to his partner.

WolfhoundsofLove · 25/02/2019 07:18

I think Adele got ordained too, so she could do the honours for Alan Carr.

Romanov · 25/02/2019 18:30

well, I've just done it! free, but $40 to get the paperwork!
