Setting off alarm at airport security

Grandadwasthatyou · 24/02/2019 18:10

Following on from another thread about setting off shop alarms, why do I trigger the airport security beeper 99% of the time I go through?
I have no metal in my body, wear leggings and sandals, no heavy jewellery, no watch , only a very very fine necklace.
I'm getting fed up of either being patted down or having to stand in that X-ray machine.
I know it's a necessary evil, I'm just wondering what it is about me? It's just done it again today as I went through!

Under wired bra?

NakedAvenger · 24/02/2019 18:15

Underwire bra for me always. I've even had the metal logo on a pair of flip flops trigger it. The metal bit on a hair tie Tiny rivets on jeans. Jewellery can trigger it too no matter how fine.

Livid21 · 24/02/2019 18:18

Mahoosive boobs. Underwire.

Sillybilly1234 · 24/02/2019 18:23

I get stopped every time, without fail.

I have told the kids that I am so gorgeous the security people are desperate to meet me.

The kids don't believe me unfortunately. I have an ugly face. Haha.

Bobobobobob · 24/02/2019 18:24

Massive boobs here too but I have a very guilty looking face so get patted down even when I don't beep.

BigStripeyBastard · 24/02/2019 18:31

I inevitably get dragged out the line for additional checks in airports. Happens every time. If I don't get carted out in advance, I ping the security scanner and get the full body pat down.
Absolutely no idea why. It has happened without fail since I accidentally punched an armed copper in the face at Heathrow in about 2007. I'm guessing I either have a marker on my passport (tin foil hat time) or the fact that I find flying and airports so massively stressful that I must just give off the stress markers of someone who has 8 pounds of explosives strapped to my chest.
I was pulled out at Budapest a few years ago, asked to spread my arms and the lady doing my pat down called over all her colleagues to marvel at how ridiculously long my arms are..... I didn't realise I was a freak of nature until then...... 😁

maslinpan · 24/02/2019 18:34

DH has titanium hips which set things off every single time, contrary to what the surgeon told him.

Grandadwasthatyou · 24/02/2019 18:36

No underwired bra! I am on the large size and gave up wearing them long ago due to the wire digging into me constantly.
No jeans, always travel in comfortable leggings and a loose top. Sometimes boots, which you have to take off anyway. Stopped wearing ear rings as thought that may be the cause, but no. I have a feeling if I went through naked I would still get stopped!

Sometimes it's just random. I don't have big boobs and get stopped sometimes.

toastonbean · 24/02/2019 18:45

When you go through that new swishy X-ray machine you can look at the screen and it'll show you what part of your body has set it off.

Last time for me it was a sequinned logo thing on my sweatshirt and it's always my bangles (they don't come off)

sackrifice · 24/02/2019 18:47

They didn't get all the metal out of my elbow, so I set it off each time too.

SpanielEars070 · 24/02/2019 18:48

I also have this. Every bloody time.

I wonder if it's my Mirena coil though. Or metal fillings?

Grandadwasthatyou · 24/02/2019 18:53

No coil ( well past the age of needing that). A few metal fillings but I would have thought the majority of the population would have those.

I will have a look next time I'm in the " swishy x ray machine " ( great description) and see if I can spot anything.

They go off at random as well as when they detect metal.

Blankiefan · 24/02/2019 19:42

I've experimented widely with this. For me, it's Kirby grips in my hair.

DorothyZbornak · 24/02/2019 19:50

I do it every single time. No one in any airport has ever been able to get to the bottom of it. In Edinburgh last year the (very nice) lady checking me eventually went "Well, I give up. Do you have any fillings?" My reply of "Yes, but I'm not taking those out" just made her laugh and she sent me on my way, neither of us any the wiser.

bluetongue · 25/02/2019 08:32

I read recently that security will make the machines more or less sensitive at random. No idea if it’s true. I recently set one off. It could have been my jeans or underwire bra but I’ve worn those dozens of times on flights with no issues.

What I really hate is that my closest airport has one of those new body scanners and both times I’ve been through it’s picked up something around my groin area and I’ve had to have the pat down. Awkward.

bingoitsadingo · 25/02/2019 11:23

Tbh I find very small amounts of metal set it off. I always take off my watch, even though they say I don't need to, because otherwise it goes off. My friends with glasses set it off.

Iruka · 25/02/2019 11:33

I have a foot long metal rod in my leg and it doesn't always set off the scanner!! I work around airports and ports so I go through the things a lot more than just on holidays.

The scanners are set to select people at random but it shouldn't target you every time. You might be getting selected for your behaviour if you are looking really excessively nervous.

CMOTDibbler · 25/02/2019 11:38

Sometimes the machines are more sensitive than others, but there is a fairly frequent random selection too.

I'm a very frequent traveller and have a big metal plate in my arm plus screws, and I don't set the metal detector off on most occasions. The sweepy system always needs patting down under my hair though

TheLollipopShoes · 25/02/2019 11:40

I have a metal plate and screws and find that I set it off in most airports now which is a pain. I never used to set it off in my local airport until about five years ago, now I'm amazed when I travel and it doesn't sound.

youngestisapsycho · 25/02/2019 11:57

I always set them off... maybe its the underwire? DD wears underwire and glasses and has never set it off?
