Banning screens

Has anyone ever completely taken away screens from the family for a set amount of time - eg 1 month? If so what happened?
After another meltdown from DS1 after being asked to turn Netflix off (sunny day, we were going to the beach) we are considering it. The idea is to break the habit and stop the constant mindless screens and demands .
I'm not sure about it as it will cause huge battles but DH is adamant it is what our family needs.
The van will include us adults btw - so probably won't put it in place until I've finished Dirty John on Netflix ..!

I tend to book quite a few cheap holidays that involve no screens over the year, my dc get reminded that life can be fun without them. So they get no screens at all for 1 -2 weeks at a time. It's enough of a reset to get screen use in proportion when we get home.
Otherwise, if they did not self-regulate, I would do a routine of times when screens can be used rather than a full ban. Their social life is often through screens so I wouldn't want to ban that.
