Dd was 11 as was I. Do you have a wee zippy bag to take spare pads and pants to school? Lillets do a starter pack with a bag that you can use

Youngandfree · 24/02/2019 12:18

I was the exact same age! It’s more common than you think 💐

Jimpix · 24/02/2019 12:18

Ahh bless her...and you! It’s within the normal age range but yes, it feels very young. My dd started in November when she was 11.9.

Arowana · 24/02/2019 12:21

My DD is in year 6 and as far as she knows none of the girls in her class have. She hasn't either. So it seems young to me. Good that she is happy though!

Aprilshowersarecomingsoon · 24/02/2019 12:22

Still waiting and dd is 13.5!
Can't say I am not secretly pleased! !

WendyCope · 24/02/2019 12:25

Thank you all for the kind replies. Very good idea about spare knickers, thanks, I had only thought about pads.

Can she even use tampons so young?

I was so much older so feel I was better to cope. She is tiny, well very tall but thin! No real warning signs.

I suppose it's better nutrition or something. Thanks again all. I am in shock!

The average age is 12 which means lots of girls start before then

WendyCope · 24/02/2019 12:26

Yes, I was thinking 13 ish! Didn't realise 10 was even normal.

dancemom · 24/02/2019 12:27

Dd was 9, also tall

However she hasn't grown at all since she started.

WendyCope · 24/02/2019 12:29

She is 11 in 2 months so I suppose it's not that abnormal. I just feel upset for some reason (need to get over that!)

I made a big fuss of her and said congratulations etc and luckily I had chocolate in the fridge but I am now feeling a bit blue Smile

DD started just after her 10th birthday and was the first in her school (63 girls) as far as she knew. It was tough for her being an earlier starter, but more girls did start during year5 and others in year 6. She has since become the go to girl for period advice since she is the "expert" ! She's now in year 8 and there are plenty of girls who have still not started. There really is large range of "normal" ages!

WendyCope · 24/02/2019 12:32

dancemom I read that! You don't grow much after you start your period! So she is going to end up being very short! I am really tall, probably because my period started so late!

I was 10...

AlexaShutUp · 24/02/2019 12:33

My dd was 13, think I was around the same. It's good that your dd is so pleased!Smile

WendyCope · 24/02/2019 12:33

Thanks Redsky

I know I was desperate to start and was the last Hmm
Thought DD would at least be a bit older.

GlossyTaco · 24/02/2019 12:35

She was 10 also.

WendyCope · 24/02/2019 12:35

Thankyou Alexa and Trendy

I was that age and the tallest girl in my class at that point, I didn’t grow much after though. Glad she is taking it well!

KrazyKatlady · 24/02/2019 12:39

my period started when I was 14 but I am v petite. My DD is 12 and has developed a lot puberty-wise in the past year/18 months , but not yet started her period.
bodyform had an offer where there was a small tin to keep pads in whcih I said DD should keep in her bag to try and spare her the embarrassment of having to ask anyone for sanpro.
I will feel sad/emotional when she starts. DH told me I was silly to feel that way but unless you have experienced a period I guess you don' know what a pain (literally!) they are!

HappyMama01 · 24/02/2019 12:42

I was 8 when mine first started. Bless her heart, it is a shock to the system getting your first!

PlinkPlink · 24/02/2019 12:51

I was 11.

God I still remember how much it hurt and how miserable I was!

My DM and DSis looked after me, gave me a hot water bottle, nice warm milk and some nice food of my choice.
I was in so much pain 🙈😂😂

Please, please let her know that accidents are okay. That if there are any leaks to take off pants and soak in cold water and to let you know. That tampons vary in size according to flow not size of hoohaa (as I was misinformed for a long time on that one 🙈). And make sure she reads the leaflets thoroughly - particularly in regards to how long she should keep a tampon in. Obvs you and I know these bits but it's information she might not yet know.

I would imagine pads would be best for the first time. As she feels more confident she can experiment with the tampons. Just go gently.

WendyCope · 24/02/2019 12:52

Happy 8! How on earth does an 8 year old cope? Well done!

Krazy Thanks for your reply.

Oddly, I think about half the class have started already Hmm seems MUCH younger these days.

Thanks everyone Flowers

I was almost 16. I am very petite though and always have been. I remember how desperate I was to start and hating being "behind" in my friendship group.

Cake to your DD Wendy although she sounds like she is taking it all in her stride!

ahhhhheckmecervix · 24/02/2019 12:56

I was 10 almost 11 when I started mine (28 now) so not unusual. I was probably the earliest out my friends though 🤷‍♀️
