My Dd was 11. You can get teen sanitary towels which are smaller and more discreet. Make sure she's got a spare in her school bag. My DD has been brilliant. Much more responsible about it that I'd have thought and I think she quite likes the sense that me and her are in it together!

FurryDogMother · 24/02/2019 14:30

I was 10. It was 1969, so not a lot has changed!

t1mum3 · 24/02/2019 14:36

Was thinking recently how great period pants would be for young girls. I remember the huge embarrassment of never knowing when I would come on and worrying about leaks. I will definitely be buying these for my DD when she starts puberty www.modibodi.co.uk/red/?gclid=EAIaIQobChMI64SLrcvU4AIVzbHtCh23uQqkEAAYASABEgIgqvD_BwE

Is it true you don't grow much after you start your periods? If so I finally have a reason why I'm such a titch (started just before my 11th birthday) Grin

AnchorDownDeepBreath · 24/02/2019 14:52

You don't grow much after you start your period!

I grew loads after, so I wouldn't worry too much! She might not, but I know plenty of people who do.

LoniceraJaponica · 24/02/2019 14:56

“She's delighted”

Really! Why? She soon won’t be when she realises what a faff it is. I was 13, and so was DD. It seems young to me.

sleepyviolet · 24/02/2019 15:11

Well I think I'll follow the advice of dds consultant who wants to monitor her so her growth isn't stunted. My sister started in y6 and is shortest of my siblings.

PointlessUsername · 24/02/2019 15:17

I was 10
Dd1was 10
Dd2 was 10

bringmethehorizonx · 24/02/2019 15:18

My mum was 9 when she had hers. I was 12.

TansyTree · 24/02/2019 15:19

Dd1 13 like me
Dd2 11

MachineBee · 24/02/2019 15:22

I was 10, DD1 was 12, DD2 was 9 and I was away on a conference. My ExH called my DM as he couldn’t cope with it Hmm

goldengummybear · 24/02/2019 15:25

I think that the general rule is that you stop growing 2 years after your period starts.

I started at 12, my dd was 13. She wasn't regular for the first year or two and uses Teen Lilets.

BendydickCuminsnatch · 24/02/2019 15:26

I was 9 and devastated!!! I barely knew anything about it. 15 seems the other end of the spectrum! Glad she’s taking it well :)

Flump9 · 24/02/2019 15:31

DD was 10.5 and was tallest in class, she's now 15 and short with tiny feet having stopped growing shortly after.

OhTheRoses · 24/02/2019 15:33

DD was 10 and 5 months. It wasn't unexpected bearing in mind her development. She was one of the tallest but then everyone started growing and overtook her. She had a little spurt at 17 though and reached 5'4-1/2.

I went to see the head because I was worried about loo's etc. School were great. There was a code word for going that wouldn't be ignored and she (and the other girl) were allowed to use the teachers toilets outside of break/lunch times and could keep their supplies there and the head made sure there were emergency supplies.

She had her ears pierced to celebrate the rite of passage.

flowersaremyfave · 24/02/2019 15:35

My girls were 12 and so was I

cordeliavorkosigan · 24/02/2019 15:35

I grew 8 inches after starting at 12...

Heatherjayne1972 · 24/02/2019 16:43

I was 12. My mum was 16 and my own daughter was 10
I did have a quiet word with her class teacher tho - just in case she needed to go to the loo during lessons
Spare pants and a zippy bag is an excellent idea

thegreylady · 24/02/2019 16:45

My did was nearly 15. I started on my 12th birthday.

LoniceraJaponica · 24/02/2019 16:49

"She had her ears pierced to celebrate the rite of passage."

Seriously Hmm
Why?
I don't see starting periods as a rite of passage. It is just part of growing up. It isn't anything to celebrate really.

Cheetahssitonfajitas · 24/02/2019 16:52

I was 16. I hope this means menopause will be later!

WhoKnewBeefStew · 24/02/2019 17:00

My dd has hers just before she was 11, I felt so sorry for her as she seemed so fed up.

cheeseandpineapple · 24/02/2019 17:11

Another vote for period pants, they’re amazing! Also would recommend a mattress protector for your daughter if you haven’t already got one as the frequency of periods can be unpredictable in the first few months. My dd was completely caught out and literally woke up to a bit of a blood bath one day, poor love. Her periods seem much heavier and longer in duration than mine ever were.

fudgesmummy · 24/02/2019 17:13

I don’t know if any of your daughters schools have a box supplied by The Red Box Project?
I am the coordinator for my area and we provide schools with boxes stocked with pads, tampons, pants and tights. (All of which has been donated by local people)
This is mainly as a fight against “period poverty” where girls are missing school as they can’t afford to buy sanitary protection, but also for any girl cought short or having an accident and needing clean pants/tights.
The picture showed boxes ready to go into our 3 local secondary schools 🙂
