WWYD shouted at in supermarket

This afternoon, I was hurrying round my local supermarket, picking up a few bits and bobs, mind on my shopping list. It was very, very crowded.

I had taken one of those baskets with wheels that you pull behind you. I wasn't concious of hitting anybody's ankles, but as it was busy, I totally could have done.

Next thing I know, there's man shouting really loudly, at me, "you hurt my son, with your basket!" He was a good two metres from me, shouting and pointing, and I felt immediately threatened, because of the shouting. There was a child of about 8-10 rubbing his legs. I must admitt to being so surprised at being yelled at that I didn't react immediately. My first reaction was to apologise, but because he had shouted I didn't. I said "he should be more careful" and walked off, shaking, because I felt really scared.

What would you have done? I'm thinking I should have apologised, but the man shouted and it scared me. I'm now thinking I should go to a different supermarket and I'm feeling really shaken up by the whole thing.

You should have said sorry rather than blaming the child

diamondofdoom · 23/02/2019 19:00

Probably would've said sorry 🤷🏻‍♀️

Biancadelrioisback · 23/02/2019 19:03

Why were you so frightened? Fair enough he shouldn't have shouted but surely you can feel when your basket hits off things?

starzig · 23/02/2019 19:04

I wouldnt use a drag around basket. They are awful for this. Nobody ever looks what they are doing with them.

CameliaCamelia · 23/02/2019 19:05

I'd have said ok I'm sorry for that but why are you shouting?

flumpybear · 23/02/2019 19:07

Sorry but YOU'RE the one who needs to be more careful, I'd have been quite miffed if you'd hit my child too

Jaxhog · 23/02/2019 19:10

You should have said sorry. Those baskets are a menace, and you need to be more careful. It's too easy to knock someone like a child or an elderly person over, if you aren't careful. It's also bloody painful.

Wolfiefan · 23/02/2019 19:12

Take more care so you don’t smack people with your basket. Confused
Why on earth did you say the child should be more careful so that YOU didn’t hit him.

The child should be more careful? You hit him. Maybe push the basket in front of you if you are not aware of people around you.

ILoveMaxiBondi · 23/02/2019 19:13

You felt really scared? Confused in a crowded supermarket, what did you think would happen. Are people really such snowflakes these days they can’t cope with being told they did something wrong? It’s scary?

TheGreenDot · 23/02/2019 19:13

I think I’d have said I’m sorry I didn’t notice I had. I hope he’s ok but there’s no need to shout st me.
Walk away thinking am I really that dippy I didn’t notice hitting someone?!

user1457017537 · 23/02/2019 19:13

I had this in hospital last week. A girl with a cabin bag on wheels was tripping everyone up and was completely oblivious. She was just stopping in her tracks and people were tumbling over.

Wow. You are totally in the wrong.

Stayawayfromitsmouth · 23/02/2019 19:14

Are you feeling alright in yourself?

Drogosnextwife · 23/02/2019 19:16

Are you sure you didn't know you hit him? Surely you felt that.

Positivelypractical · 23/02/2019 19:19

I don't know why I found him so scary, it seems irrational to me, too. He was definitely really shouting, not just calling out, I think I was just concentrating on what was next on my list. Obviously he wasn't happy, but he seemed agressive to me, just because he was shouting, and he was a man I guess. It was so busy in there though, everybody was stop-starting and getting in each other's way.
I would have thought I would have felt it too, but I only had about four light items in my basket.
I think I'm overthinking this. I shouldn't have been so alarmed at being shouted at.

Why are people so precious these days? You hurt a child but didn't apologise, and you were scared and shaking?? In a crowded supermarket. What on earth did you suppose was going to happen?

HaventGotAllDay · 23/02/2019 19:21

You might be overthinking being shouted at, but you seem to be underthinking the fact you were in the wrong to start with, and then when told you'd hurt a child told the child off!

FlyingMonkeys · 23/02/2019 19:23

Are you sure you don't mean embarrassed rather than scared?

CameliaCamelia · 23/02/2019 19:23

I don't think op was in the wrong

She didn't feel like she had hit him with it, more likely someone else accidentally shoved it in the kids leg

showerpower · 23/02/2019 19:24

Why didn't you say sorry ?

Positivelypractical · 23/02/2019 19:25

Stayawayfromitsmouth
Are you feeling alright in yourself?

No, I have an ear infection and am going back to the doctor's on Monday as the antibiotics don't seem to have completely got rid of it. So I've been feeling under the weather, but I shouldn't be so pathetic!

Barrenfieldoffucks · 23/02/2019 19:27

Child should be more careful to avoid being hit by basket at floor level? How do you see that working?

Redglitter · 23/02/2019 19:27

Wow you handled this so badly. You hurt a child then passed the blame and didn't apologise. The father was probably angry his son had been hurt. Yes he may have over reacted but thats no excuse for your poor behaviour.
