Anyone able to give some advice?

OH came in from playing rugby a couple of weeks ago with a big cut/ bruise on the side of his thigh. It's from a boot, so the cuts were approximately 4 stud marks and the bruise was a purple circle around the whole thing - as far as I am aware this means it is more of a blunt impact injury, rather than a deep cut.
It was extremely painful the next morning but a light dog walk and some hovering meant that it loosened up sufficiently to get around.

The circle of bruising is now around 2/3 bigger and is dissipating, and the cuts are mostly healed/ now very shallow. All looking fine and no longer painful. He has trained since.

Underneath however, is a visibly raised section of muscle, reasonably firm, that runs approximately the length of the original non-bruised area of skin (6-7cm). Is this likely to be scar tissue within the muscle or is it normal for swelling to last this long? He is concerned that if it is scar tissue, it could lead to worse injuries in the future if he doesn't see a physio before playing again.

(Physio is booked in March, but wanted to get an idea.) Googling 'what should scar tissue feel like' isn't helping as they all seem to focus on surgical muscle scarring.
