How to get assessed for ADHD (adult)?

Old-ish poster back for round two (now the privacy policy is better than was).

Posting a question on behalf of a friend - her son is at uni and doing okay, but he's been looking at various aspects of his character / behaviours and is wondering if he has ADHD. He asked at uni and they said speak to his GP. He had an appointment with the GP this week and the response was "the NHS doesn't do anything with ADHD" and he suggested two websites.

The lad is feeling a bit lost, so I said I'd ask as his Ma doesn't use social media, etc. and is a bit stumped.

Any suggestions on how or where he can go to either get a referral or a diagnosis?

He's in Scotland if that makes any difference.

The NHS does do something with ADHD in adults. He will have a long wait though as there is something like one NHS therapist in the whole of Scotland who deals with ADHD.

There is a guide on the AADD UK website about what exactly he needs to say to his doctor.

His GP is talking bilge.

Nice guidelines are only England & Wales, I think but outline how it's supposed to be treated.

There is an ADHD charity in Scotland & in fact if he's in Edinburgh, there's a course running shortly

There's even an MSP who is medicated & inspirational.

There is also online psychiatric services if he wants to go private.

Bertie - thank you. I'll tell him to get onto that website.

Whatdoyouknowwhenyouknownowt - thank you. Good to know! He's a couple of hours away from Edinburgh and about to start exam season (I think), but I'll tell him what you've said.
