18mo Nursery time out

18mo had 2nd full session (3hrs) at nursery yesterday. Prior to this he was with me 24/7 and hadn’t had much interaction with other children his age, which they are aware of. He only goes 1 afternoon a week.

Got told at pick up that he had thrown a small toy at another child and so was put in time out for 5 minutes, although he didn’t sit still so was more like 1 minute.

I didn’t say much as was taken aback but is this normal? He often throws things out of excitement (and anger), when he does we’ll tell him no sternly and take the item away, I can’t see him having any concept of time out at that age?

Not sure whether I should query this with them or not, my older children went to this same nursery some years ago but I can’t remember them doing this so young.

Think it's pretty normal in most nurseries. I wouldn't be happy with 5 minutes though.
Tbh he won't have any understanding of it anyway and it's pointless at that age.

I wouldn’t be happy with that. Time Out wasn’t appropriate and he wouldn’t even understand it.

That's ridiculous at 18 months. He won't understand why he's there. They seem a bit crap.

Thanks glad I’m not the only one thinking it’s OTT. I’ll speak to them & ask their policy etc and say how pointless it is, he’s a ‘young’ 18mo too IMO.

They’ve always been a very good nursery & highly rated, so this has thrown me a bit. There was no mention of it specifically in the information booklet.
