Weird Womble Epiphany

The other day I was driving to Solihull and noticed that it was twinned with Cholet. Hmm I thought, like the womble....

Bit later in the day I had this huge lightbulb moment OMG all the wombles have names of places, how did I not know this before??

Then it got more weird, I was in the shower this morning and remembered that Great Uncle Bulgaria names the wombles from an atlas, I clearly recall reading this aged about 6 or 7.

The only explanation I can come up with is that 6/7 year old me had never heard of these places so thought that GU Bulgaria used a special womble atlas with made up place names in

I may be overthinking this....

Aren’t they all Bernard ? Or do you mean in the suit ?

BHStowel · 20/02/2019 22:58

Don’t go Wombling in the nettle beds my friends, no Wombling in the nettle beds.

Roll back the carpet cos it’s Bungo’s birthday, another year older and another year wise. Roll back the carpet cos it’s Bungo’s birthday and there’s going to be a big surprise.

Don't forget Miss Adelaide the teacher - I don't think Madame Cholet was solely responsible for procreation Grin

I loved the Wombles, and still read the books from time to time Blush

ALemonyPea · 20/02/2019 23:01

I bloody loved the Wombles.

When I was a toddler I had a Wombles T-shirt that I loved dearly, refused to take it off for weeks. My mam would take it off me as I slept, hand wash it, dry it with a hair dryer (no tumble dryer back then) and put it back on me.

I went to see them in concert - twice!

And I had the album 😀

Weird Womble Epiphany has to be my favourite thread title for some time.

Bernard Cribbins...my first true love

iklboo · 21/02/2019 07:50

I still love Bernard Cribbins. He's my fantasy grandad. I've got a signed photo.

ShatnersWig · 21/02/2019 08:18

Bernard Cribbins is undoubtedly on the list of National Treasures. He's the Nation's Grandad as far as I am concerned. I think it should become an official title.

His autobiography is bloody brilliant, written just as if he was talking to you one on one like he did Jackanory,

The Wombles are great - whether it's Elisabeth Beresford's original books or Mike Batt's catchy songs or Cribbins and the TV show.

Quooker · 21/02/2019 08:57

I saw the Wombles in Selfridges, helping in Santa’s grotto C1976.

hazeyjane · 21/02/2019 09:20

I went to a party when I was little, and in the middle of the party a womble turned up. A WOMBLE!!!

IT WAS FUCKING AWESOME. I can still remember the thrill of Orinoco dancing into the room. The girl whose party it was carried goddess like status through to her teenage years all because of that party.

The poor man who was being paid to wear an enormous furry sweat suit to be mobbed by dozens of sticky 4/5 year olds in kilts and nylon flares, high on sherbet dipdabs, Quosh and cheese and pineapple on sticks.....I hope he was well paid. Poor sod.

DH as a small child always looked for the wombles when he went to Wimbledon common.
