Shamima Begum has her citizenship revoked

How can this happen? I thought they aren't allowed to leave a person stateless? Not that I'm disagreeing, I'm just wondering how they managed it.

OP posts:
ReflectentMonatomism · 19/02/2019 21:29

Ah - thanks, Reflectent; I didn't know she was an only child

Like others I am confusing two traitorous Bangladeshi heritage women from London who have gone to Syria.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 19/02/2019 21:29

Wikipedia ... has been edited by an incompetent who has mixed up the woman who is at present in the news - Shamima Begum, with her friend with a similar name - Sharmeena Begum

Oh lord - now I'm even more confused Confused

DataBreachCentral · 19/02/2019 21:31

Does anyone know if Shamima has any siblings to express a view on this?

Pretty sure her brother has been a spokesperson for the family recently.

Personally I think this decision has been driven by the public outcry at her lack of remorse/regret.

Allowing her back to the UK will increase support for the far right at a delicate time for the UK. 'Yellow vest' protests are starting to spread in the UK and there seems to be a lot of far right involvement.

I also don't think it's coincidence that this has occurred since this situation became 'hot news':

www.standard.co.uk/news/crime/brighton-stabbing-murder-probe-launched-after-brother-of-two-isis-fighters-knifed-to-death-a4068956.html

I think the Govt is shit scared of things getting out of control at the moment.

Budsbegginingspringinsight · 19/02/2019 21:34

I thought yellow vest was far left in France?

maddiemookins16mum · 19/02/2019 21:34

Traumatised kid, pffft.

I care more about the traumatised kids/families/wives/husbands etc who have had their lives ripped apart by ISIS attacks.

ILoveCrunchyAutumnLeaves · 19/02/2019 21:35

Got to agree on the fact 400 other IS extremists have waltzed back in to the UK, only 54 were prosecuted, the only reason for the Hype is that she is female and was/is more famous than the others.

Most of the 400 extremists were adults when they chose to leave unlike Shamima.

I don't think she should be allowed back but why reject her and not the other 400, who are all equally as dangerous.

CherryPavlova · 19/02/2019 21:35

I find it repugnant that a teenager with a baby is being used for political gain.
I don’t know the full intelligence about the girl to form an informed opinion on the rights or wrongs but my instinct tells me she’s just a not very bright teenager who has had two babies die already. I think taking away her citizenship is not the best way to rehabilitate her or reduce further risks.

vinoandbrie · 19/02/2019 21:35

Good. Bangladesh can have her, or she can stay where she is and be prosecuted. My only sympathy is for her dead children and her newborn.

lljkk · 19/02/2019 21:36

White people...
David Hicks had his Brit citizenship stripped (went back to Aus).
Anna Chapman had her Brit citizenship stripped (went back to Russia).
Do Albanian people count as 'white'? Altin Arusha

Being a violence-supporting male Muslim extremist is the standard profile.

Brilliant stuff

Calatonia · 19/02/2019 21:36

@Puzzledandpissedoff

Oh lord - now I'm even more confused

I know. Improbable as it seems they have similar first names, identical surnames and they went to the same school.... but the one whose mother died is Sharmeena who was the first to go to Syria and the one who we are given to understand has just had a baby in Syria is Shamima who with two other girls followed her schoolmate.
www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2019/02/14/british-schoolgirl-joined-isil-found-syria-wants-come-home/

It's chaos over at Wikipedia 'cos every time someone corrects the article someone else comes along and mixes it all up again.

Jsmith99 · 19/02/2019 21:37

Excellent news.

It’s good to see that the current Home Secretary actually has the balls to refuse to pander to the bleeding-heart PC brigade. Presumably the fact that he is a Muslim of Pakistani heritage himself means he isn’t going to be denounced as an Islamophobic racist for trying to keep society safe.

Well done Sajid Javid.

TheresACatInMyLaundryBasket · 19/02/2019 21:37

I don't think she should be allowed back but why reject her and not the other 400, who are all equally as dangerous.
Maybe they weren't dual citizens?
Some data here, if anyone is interested:

Ivegotthree · 19/02/2019 21:37

All the posters who are wringing their hands about this, look at the list of the Manchester victims and hang your stupid liberal heads in shame.

Budsbegginingspringinsight · 19/02/2019 21:40

I'm liberal, I don't think these are liberal views.

Some people on this thread might support Isis we don't know.

MadMum101 · 19/02/2019 21:40

No, you cannot be naturalised as a BC until you reach 18. This person's parents were not BC when she was born here so she would not have qualified at birth.

bumsandtums · 19/02/2019 21:41

Very very glad.

prh47bridge · 19/02/2019 21:41

I haven't read the full thread. However, the answer to the OP's original question is that the Home Secretary may be acting beyond his powers. He can make a naturalised citizen stateless under the Immigration Act 2014 but the relevant legislation does not give him the power to make any other citizen stateless.

MadCatEnthusiast · 19/02/2019 21:41

struggling through the citizenship classes ( in a burka) to get the passport is just too hilarious

It's a niqab she's been wearing, not a burkha. A burqa is mostly worn in Afghan and has a mesh covering where the eyes and the whole face are covered. Niqab is open at the eyes and the rest of the face is covered. There's a big difference

Budsbegginingspringinsight · 19/02/2019 21:43

I want people in UK to live free liberal life without two tiers system on female subjugation, without Sharia courts, without prejudice for being gay, for being allowed too practise religion as long as it's not insidious to British values and human rights... and the right too walk across a bridge without being run over, eat meal without throat slit, Go freely anywhere without fear of death including....a rock concertAngry

Budsbegginingspringinsight · 19/02/2019 21:44

Really cat! A big difference!!

explodingkitten · 19/02/2019 21:44

@HumptyDoo

As I wrote in my post, there are more things she needs to do to get Dutch citizenship. Just the two that I highlighted were proof enough that she will not qualify. The UK doesn't want her back, and now posters are saying that she should apply for Dutch citizenship. She won't qualify for that.

KingHenrysCodpiece · 19/02/2019 21:44

I feel zero shame. I feel awful for tbe manchester victims. I think Shamima is unlikable, and potentially very dangerous. I think fair trial and justice supersedes my emotions.

bumsandtums · 19/02/2019 21:44

How about we all just read the BBC report and we all have the facts?
