Shamima Begum has her citizenship revoked

How can this happen? I thought they aren't allowed to leave a person stateless? Not that I'm disagreeing, I'm just wondering how they managed it.

OP posts:
Tanith · 19/02/2019 21:17

"But I wonder how come 300 ex fighters return no publicity yet all the focus is on a young girl who, frankly, was underage and bereaved, and didn't do anything while in Syria apart from have babies who died."

She's a woman. That's why.

No doubt, now that he's made his brave stand, Javid will carry on letting those ex fighters quietly back into the country and there'll be no outcry, no fuss.

BusyMumHere · 19/02/2019 21:17

Her UK citizenship is being revoked. That doesn't mean that she is stateless - she is also a national of Bangladesh.

SheWoreBlueVelvet · 19/02/2019 21:17

We do endless “ rights and responsibilities” lessons as school. The point being your rights also come with responsibilities which in the U.K. means not killing people. With or with a court of law.

teaandgingercake · 19/02/2019 21:17

In another thread I said she should be stripped of her citizenship, but I got shot down by "know alls" who said she had every legal right to come home. Well they were wrong, why did they presume she didn't have dual nationality.

It's about time Britain got tough, for too long they've been seen as the easy touch, with people like this girl taking the piss. She doesn't deserve to live amongst us, no sympathy what so ever.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 19/02/2019 21:18

This (background) sounds like a Bangladeshi enclave culturally and linguistically isolated from the uk

If so, perhaps that might explain why the family are leaving it to others to speak for them?

Does anyone know if Shamima has any siblings to express a view on this?

HumptyDoo · 19/02/2019 21:18

This girls timing was a gift to the government.

Seriously, both the Government and the Opposition must be on their knees giving thanks to the Almighty. Anything to get their incompetence off the front page right now.

Budsbegginingspringinsight · 19/02/2019 21:18

The killing is a two way thing.

ShockShock

MadgeMidgerson · 19/02/2019 21:18

This sets an interesting precedent

It would appear that citizenship is tiered with anyone with ancestry elsewhere on a slightly lower level than brits whose families are Anglo Saxon to the nth generation

This is a step beyond stripping naturalised citizens of an acquired citizenship

Yowza

PostmanPatIsIncompetent · 19/02/2019 21:19

Genevieva Well, I didn't know those points about Javid until your thoughtful post earlier, so thank you to you too!

MadgeMidgerson · 19/02/2019 21:19

And I am saying this despite how terrible she is or how much she may deserve whatever - this opens a door that will be very difficult to close indeed

teaandgingercake · 19/02/2019 21:20

Tanith She isn't a young girl.

Budsbegginingspringinsight · 19/02/2019 21:21

I didn't want too watch her video as it would make me too cross. I've just seen a short clip.... animated... passionate about the killing being done right now...a two way thing...

I don't see how anyone viewing that thinks she's Safe .

She's fucking terrifying.

ReflectentMonatomism · 19/02/2019 21:22

Only child of a widower who has remarried, raised by fanatic uncle and her grandmother. A perfect storm for cultural isolation mixed with anger.

Tanith · 19/02/2019 21:22

teaandgingercake I didn't say she was. I quoted another poster.

Calatonia · 19/02/2019 21:22

@TearingUpMyHeart

"Wikipedia tells me her mother died of cancer just before she left for syria, age 15."

Wikipedia is an ass.... or more accurately, it has been edited by an incompetent who has mixed up the woman who is at present in the news - Shamima Begum, with her friend with a similar name - Sharmeena Begum. Yes, seriously, they had the same surname and went to the same school and Sharmeena is the one whose Mum died... Sharmeena then upped and left for Syria only to be followed at a later date by the "Bethnal Green three" - Shamima, Amira and Kadiza.
The editors of Wikipedia are at present trying to disentangle the pages.
Shamima's mother is the person who received the letter from the Home Office about Shamima being stripped of her British nationality.

What do you mean by that? She is apparently a naturalised citizen. So she's losing her acquired citizenship.

HumptyDoo · 19/02/2019 21:25

She can't have been naturalised as a British Citizen as she would have done that at 18

No, you can acquire citizenship in childhood. You don't have to wait until you're 18.

NOT TRUE. That's Sharmeena, not Shamima. See my previous post.
IIRC Shamima has a sister 'cos she stole borrowed her passport to fly to Turkey.

Ah - thanks, Reflectent; I didn't know she was an only child

And these are the family who, according to the lawyer, would like to raise the baby (if indeed the baby exists) Hmm

TheresACatInMyLaundryBasket · 19/02/2019 21:27

MadgeMidgerson, you've articulated why I feel slightly uncomfortable about this. I don't really care about this girl, but I am worried about a slippery slope. And it makes me a little worried that the government can just declare someone "not a citizen anymore" without the person being found guilty in a court of any crime (I mean, we all know she committed at least the crime of supporting ISIS and travelling to join them, but still- not guilty in a court yet). It just gives me a little pause. Like I said, I don't really care what happens to her.

Budsbegginingspringinsight · 19/02/2019 21:28

Lots of confusion over who she actually is.

I'm sure I've just read article where her mum says she understands why UK doesn't want her but asking for sympathy etc

OldBrownShoe · 19/02/2019 21:29

How can she be an only child if she used her older sisters passport?

whataboutbob · 19/02/2019 21:29

Just a thought. To be Dutch, she’d have to do the citizenship test, and say she agrees with Dutch values such as geneder equality and equal rights for homosexuals. The image of her struggling through the citizenship classes ( in a burka) to get the passport is just too hilarious.
