Hi all,

I've applied to volunteer at my children's primary school. My eldest is already there and my youngest will start in September.
I'm a bit nervous but have a bit of time to spare.
If you have volunteered in school do you enjoy it?
I've said I'm happy to help with anything

Yes I used to go in and listen to readers and after a while I was trusted to go on school trips. It was very rewarding, I loved being able to see the dcs at school and it was nice being able to see a little bit about how the school ran and get to know the staff.

I listen to readers in my children’s school. Is lovely to be able to do it. I think you will enjoy it.

I manage volunteers who are placed in schools to help with reading and numeracy. Most really enjoy it, and I have some volunteers who have been at their schools for over 15 years. Teachers are increasingly asking for help with things they just don't get around to doing (like mixing paints, sharpening pencils) as well as support with learning.

Yeah I'm hoping I can be a bit of an all rounder and help out with admin tasks too.

I volunteer in my DC's school. I listen to readers, file marked work, sharpen pencils, trim paper, go on trips and lots of other little things that aren't exactly taxing but help take the load off the already worked to the max teachers. I love it!

Fallen sky sounds good to me.

I hope you’re coming to my school, I’d love to have someone like you around.

One thing that the best reading volunteers do is to ask the children lots of questions to check they’re understanding what they’re reading. Summarising what they’ve read, predicting what comes next, inferring things related to the story (a character’s feelings, time of day, motivation for action etc) and checking their understanding of new/tricky words. It’s worth asking about any informal training or reading you could do.

Good luck!

Thank you

Listening to readers or helping with art or science

Hollowvictory · 19/02/2019 16:20

No admin.

I've done this, I'm a trained teacher so I'm hoping that it will help with returning to teaching.

Hollowvictory · 19/02/2019 16:24

At our school there no applying needed you just turn up.

I volunteer a lot in school. I have my own pass and locker I’m there that often. I listen to readers, work with small groups, fetch/carry/photocopy/slice, make displays, and generally pootle about being useful.
