Which Studio Ghibli Film for 9yo and above?

Just finished watching Ponyo and the whole family really enjoyed it. Would love to watch more but I’ve heard some of them are quite dark. Can anyone tell me which ones would be suitable for age 9 upwards please?

My Neighbour Totoro and Arrietty

Binglebong · 18/02/2019 21:14

Howell's moving castle has darker bits but I dont think anything a nine year old would have trouble with.

The cat returns

Love studio ghibli

Wish they made more!

Laputa - Castle in the sky, My Neighbour Totoro, Howls moving Castle and Arrietty are all great.

chipshopElvis · 18/02/2019 21:18

Oh and Kikis Delivery Service

IamPickleRick · 18/02/2019 21:18

My LO likes Laputa and Totoro.

Don’t go near Grave of the Fireflies, it is definitely not suitable!

MaFleur · 18/02/2019 21:19

Kiki’s delivery service is just lovely!

QoFE · 18/02/2019 21:19

The Cat Returns and Kiki's Delivery Service for sure, they're both lovely Smile

IWantMyHatBack · 18/02/2019 21:20

Avoid Grave of the Fireflies.

Princess Mononoke is quite brutal, and Nausicaa of the valley of the wind is fine until the last bit and then it's a bit weird/apocalyptic. Tales of Earthsea is borderline, but mine were fine with it. My two had seen all of these by 6yo, but I know them well enough to forward the dark bits.

All the others will be fine. I highly recommend Laputa for this age, it's superb. There is some violence (guns/explosions) and a few scary bits, but think it's fine for 9.
Howl's Moving Castle is great for this age as well.

Spirited Away is FANTASTIC.

Totoro, Kiki's Delivery Service, Cat Returns... Just watch them all

So those, and that's pretty much in order of preference.

Dreamzcancometrue · 18/02/2019 21:20

Princess mononoke is also a bit dark. So wouldn't recommend.

IWantMyHatBack · 18/02/2019 21:20

We're a Ghibli house, we all know it backwards and love it to death (in case you can't tell)

IWantMyHatBack · 18/02/2019 21:22

Not a fan of Arrietty, but think a 9yo would like it.

Avoid Up on Poppy Hill, just because it's not very good. Blush

One more coming out soon Grin

PersonalClown · 18/02/2019 21:22

Spirited Away is sooo good.
It's been in my bluray player for weeks now

PastaSauceHoarder · 18/02/2019 21:24

Oh I love Studio Ghibli!

Kiki's Delivery Service is nice and easy watching. Smile Spirited Away is just breathtaking, I'm sure I was 10 when I first watched it and it was so magic.
The Cat Returns is also very childlike too.

I agree, definitely 100% avoid Grave of the Fireflies!!

punishmepunisher · 18/02/2019 21:31

My MIL was thoroughly traumatised by both Totoro and Spirited Away Grin

Binglebong · 18/02/2019 21:57

Cat returns is awesome!

SummersB · 18/02/2019 23:16

Oh wow thank you so much! See, the first Amazon review I read about Spirited Away said not to watch it with under 12s, so that made me a bit weary. Loads of suggestions here though, so thank you all very much Smile

My neighbour totoro is fantastic

chipshopElvis · 19/02/2019 17:13

My two are scared of Spirited away 7 and 9 but I think it's great!

MitziK · 19/02/2019 17:19

Totoro and Kiki are the best ones. After that, the Cat Returns, Laputa, etc.

NEVER watch Grave of the Fireflies. EVER. You WILL be traumatised by it even more than your offspring.

Spirited Away is good, but more 10/11 plus, as is Princess Mononke, as that's quite sad/about humans destroying things.

Caucasianchalkcircles · 19/02/2019 17:24

My 10 year liked grave of firefly and wasn’t spooked by it
