My daughter and I are off to New York for 4 days and I'm after recommendations for things not to miss.

I've prebooked tickets for 9/11 museum, we plan to take the Staten Island ferry to see the Statue of Liberty, we're going to go up the Empire State Building, anything else that you can suggest we see ? Or places to eat ?

We thought the bus tour was great. You can hop on hop off so use it as your means of transport and through the commentary you learn lots. Have a great time!

TheTurnOfTheScrew · 18/02/2019 17:00

how old is your daughter?

bluesky · 18/02/2019 17:02

Subway to Brooklyn and then walk back over the Brooklyn Bridge, it's fantastic.

OddCat · 18/02/2019 17:03

Dd is 21 - bus tour and Brooklyn Bridge added to our list .

If you're only going up one tall building, make it the Rockefeller - that's where you get the classic NY skyline view. If you go up the Empire State building then you don't get to see it.

Walk around Central Park

Walk over Brooklyn Bridge

Staten Island ferry doesn't go that close to the Statue of Liberty, if you were wanting to get right up to it.

swirlette · 18/02/2019 17:04

Top of the Rock rather than Empire State if you haven't booked already, the view is much better!
Ellis Island & the Tenement Museum (depending how old your DD is).
Central Park
I'd go to the Met & MoMa but again depends how old & what DD is in to!

mynameiscalypso · 18/02/2019 17:05

I'd do Top of the Rock rather than Empire State myself. My personal favourite thing to do is to walk down the high line and then go to Chelsea market to get some delicious food.

TheTurnOfTheScrew · 18/02/2019 17:05

we really enjoyed both The Met and MOMA. Don"t do MOMA on the free Friday evening though - it's too horribly packed to be enjoyable.

swirlette · 18/02/2019 17:06

Chelsea Market too now I see how old she is!

lurker101 · 18/02/2019 17:08

Clinton St. baking company is great for breakfast - think Americanstyle pancakes etc.
Russ & Daughters - bagels and pastrami
Spring St area is great for shopping - a bit more edgy/cool for shopping. Reminds me a bit of spitalfields - lots of nice places to eat here too
The View- rotating restaurant/bar at Marriott Marquis - quite touristy but a nice experience - I would probably have drinks/coffee here rather than food

What agegroup is your daughter?

lurker101 · 18/02/2019 17:10

Cross-posted - see her age now! If you use Instagram - NewForkCity is a great food page to follow for some ideas on where to eat

tararabumdeay · 18/02/2019 17:14

1 Staten Island Ferry
2 Helicopter ride
3 Central Park on a Sunday
4 Grand Central Station
5 Empire State

OddCat · 18/02/2019 17:14

Excellent- thanks all

Took my daughter to NYC to celebrate her 30th last year.
We're very keen on arty stuff, so MoMA, the Met and the Guggenheim.
Also shopping for stuff we don't have here: Bath & Body Works, Ulta, Victoria's Secret [way cheaper there]
The Brooklyn Farmacy is a bit of a trek, but is a proper old-fashioned soda fountain with amazing ice cream. We walked back over the Brooklyn Bridge but it is a bit high up and the traffic below the pedestrian walkway is very heavy and noisy.
Katz's Deli is fun, if she knows 'When Harry Met Sally'.
A walk along the High Line path, and the Whitney Museum is wonderful.

Have a really wonderful time!

StrongerThanIThought76 · 18/02/2019 17:55

One World Trade is absolutely phenomenal.

Bike ride/hire/tour round Central Park. We also did a bike tour over the Brooklyn Bridge.

Times Square. Just take time to sit, see, listen and absorb life on the red steps.

Memorial Museum is incredible, though we couldn't linger and had to leave to come out into the sunshine. The waterfalls nearby are stunning.

Bus tour would be cool but do have a go on the subway too!

I'd love to go back.

homegrownmumma · 18/02/2019 17:57

Go and see a show , we saw chicago, sat right at the back as it was the cheapest tickets but it was absolute brilliant even my musical hater husband loved it !

YouBoggleMyMind · 18/02/2019 18:03

Top of the Rocks
Empire State Building day and night
The High Line
Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island
Walk across the Brooklyn Bridge
9/11 Memorial and Museum
Central Park
Natural History Museum
Ice Hockey at Madison Square Garden
Broadway Show
Times Square

BibbityBobbityEars · 18/02/2019 18:46

If you do Empire State by day then do Top of the Rock at night.

High line great in spring and summer but a bit crap in autumn and winter imo.

Boat cruise

youwouldthink · 18/02/2019 19:31

If its summer head to Coney Island and do the big wheel

LexieLoos · 18/02/2019 20:08

I’ve just come back from my first trip to NY and had such an incredible time - what a lovely thing to do as mother and daughter as well.
Agree that Top of the Rock is a better view then the Empire State.
We got a City Pass too, and saved a fortune on entry fees to the touristy things, so may be worth checking out - www.citypass.com/new-york

ketchupormayo · 18/02/2019 20:23

Do the empire at night it's breathtaking! Is basketball on that's so good to watch! Any shows you fancy?

ketchupormayo · 18/02/2019 20:23

Just saw you DD is 21- Book of Mormon is my recommendation for a show!

Shookethtothecore · 18/02/2019 20:27

KATZ DINER!! Oh for the love of god go to KATZ DINER

Honeyroar · 18/02/2019 20:27

The helicopters aren't cheap, but the best thing I've done in NYC.
The hop on hop off bus is great.
Grand Central Station and The New York library are wonderful (and free). Try and find the whispering arch in the subway under Grand central.
Central Park is lovely all year round, skate in winter, stroll in summer..

TheSingingTowers · 18/02/2019 20:46

I’m keeping an eye on this thread as I’m off to NYC too. Some great suggestions so far...thanks!
