City breaks..

So me and my mum are looking to go away for my birthday in November, it's at the end of the month so ideally want to go somewhere with Christmas markets.

We're looking at Latvia at the moment..
has anyone been before or know people who have been?
What's their to do, is it cheap whilst there etc?

Also been looking at Budapest / Prague?
Any thoughts on those two?

We went to Poland in October last year and loved it!

Berlin has lovely Christmas markets and is really great.
Prague is beautiful, much smaller but will have what you're looking for :)

What’s “other subjects”? There’s a whole travel forum on here and this question is asked ALOT from September onwards. Check back or put in a search from last year.

If you want a cheap city break you need to do the opposite of everyone else ie ,traditional Christmas market places.
Have you considered somewhere like Barcelona? There are plenty of Chrustmas markets and lots of lights but it’s not sub zero and flights and accomadtion are very cheap as it’s off season. Even better they have bonkers traditions like the pooing man and that wooden reindeer that “ grows” over advent ( you put out a bigger version every week). A breath of fresh air after our shop fest in the UK.

@rosesandcashmere yeah a few people at work have suggested Berlin.. for some reason it doesn't take my fancy 🤔🙈😊

@JustBeenNosey I would have agreed with you about Berlin but it really does come into its own at Christmas. It has more variety than the other places as it's massive so different markets and also the history. Prague is much smaller but very pretty. It doesn't do Christmas as well as Berlin so depends how much Christmas you want? Easter in Prague is amazing! Berlin you'll need to walk or use public transport - very easy. Prague you can walk round if you stay centrally.

Christmas markets are the same wherever you go... Latvia, Munich, Manchester. Same stalls!

Bratislava is good for a city break - you can pop over to Vienna, which is only an hour by train and you can come back by boat on the Danube.

Copenhagen. Had a lovely weekend there late November some years ago. We were lucky with the weather: blue skies and sunshine ☀ Cold after dark tho!

JustBeenNosey · 19/02/2019 07:35

@rosesandcashmere Berlin might on the list for next year then. I love history about WW2 which is why we went to Poland last year and went to Auscwitz.

A friend from work has been to Prague a few times and loves it so that might be another option for next year as well haha

@SingingSands is that the same Danube that goes through Budapest?

@DisplayPurposesOnly ahh yeah. Never thought of there..

Geography isn't my strong point either guys 😂🙄

My sis in law went to Latvia last December and loved it, it was actually cheaper to go there for the weekend than York!!

JustBeenNosey · 19/02/2019 09:54

@Blueuggboots ahhh that's reassuring!

Did she say there were plenty of things to do/see?

OP posts:
Blueuggboots · 19/02/2019 09:58

She said it was FREEZING cold but that the local people were so welcoming.
Viga is very pretty apparently. I'll ask her for more info and post later.

AnnieKenney · 19/02/2019 10:12

Lisbon is beautifully decorated in the run up to Christmas, has lots of Christmas markets, isnt too cold and is reasonably cheap.

indigo13 · 19/02/2019 10:51

Check when the markets are on because many don't begin until December. Try Vienna though, their markets are on from the last week of November and it's wonderful there

JustBeenNosey · 19/02/2019 11:31

@Blueuggboots perfect thank you! I don't feel the cold anyway so that doesn't bother me 😂

@AnnieKenney thanks, I'll look into that as well!

@indigo13 yeah we have checked and they start early November. My birthdays the end of the month so looking to go around the 22nd

Hi @JustBeenNosey yes it is!

You can also catch a train down to Budapest although it's a bit longer. The trains are really cheap though, and efficient!

JustBeenNosey · 19/02/2019 18:27

@SingingSands ahhhh that's good then! Can do 2 birds with 1 stone with that one can't you x
