Speed camera flashed - but I wasn't speeding!

Last night I was driving on the Bodmin A30 duel carriageway, national speed limit road (70 - yes??) And I had my cruise control set to 68.
I went passed a speed camera and it flashed, pretty sure I was the only one on the road.

Has this happened to anyone else ? Any ideas what it could be? Anyone know the road?

Think this is the road (pic attached ) is that a central reservation? And yes I have had a licence for 5+ years .

I'm pretty sure there are always "gateway" signs when the speed changes (or so they told me on my speed awareness course). The oras I was caught on used to be a 50 & had changed to a 40. I now know what to look for, I hope.

EffYouSeeKaye · 18/02/2019 13:15

*I can't remeber if there was a central reservation or not, I drove on the road for almost 70 miles, and people were driving much quicker than me.

There’s your problem, I’d say. If you weren’t looking out for a central reservation and you weren’t aware of the law regarding national speed limit ‘60mph without / 70mph with’ rule then you were probably doing 68mph in a 60mph zone. Otherwise a dodgy camera/ camera with no film is your best hope.

Doesn’t the speed camera have to flash twice? To measure the distance you’ve travelled between flashes, compared to the lines on the road?

ineedaholidaynow · 18/02/2019 13:17

I'm trying to think of a dual carriageway I have been on without a central reservation, I assume they are quite rare

Mustbetimeforachange · 18/02/2019 13:17

Yes, that's a central reservation.

Dreamscomingtrue · 18/02/2019 13:18

I don’t think the cameras have film in them any more, isn’t it all digital these days?

SoupDragon · 18/02/2019 13:18

Try looking on Street View if you know where it was.

KittyLane1 · 18/02/2019 13:18

Probably does help it was pitch black and I was driving on an unknown road.

Does anyone have experience of that road ?

Seriously? I would be utterly appalled by anyone with a driving licence who does not know that

Prepare to be appalled, I think you are vastly overestimating the level of general knowledge of the highway code

ineedaholidaynow · 18/02/2019 13:20

There were roadworks for ages whilst they made the A30 near Bodmin dual carriageway, I would be amazed if they didn't put a central reservation in

PaquitaVariation · 18/02/2019 13:20

It’s the central reservation that turns a road into a duel carriageway, not a crash barrier or the number of lanes. The reservation can be just a strip of grass as it is on a very busy duel carriageway near us.

Traffic Signs and General directions regulations 2002
""central reservation" means -
(a) any land between the carriageways of a road comprising two carriageways; or
(b) any permanent work (other than a traffic island) in the carriageway of a road,

which separates the carriageway or, as the case may be, the part of the carriageway which is to be used by traffic moving in one direction from the carriageway or part of the carriageway which is to be used (whether at all times or at particular times only) by traffic moving in the other direction; "

Wolfiefan · 18/02/2019 13:22

Please don’t offer:
It was an unknown road
It was dark
Or other people were going faster (my personal favourite)
As defences if you were caught speeding. Hmm

Dreamscomingtrue · 18/02/2019 13:22

I’ve been driving on the A30 for 30+ years, several times a year and I thought it was 70, the part I’ve been on Bodmin to Exeter, then it goes onto the M5/M4 to London. I’ve seen one speed camera at 70; pretty sure there are signs. Which direction were you travelling?

CheesecakeAddict · 18/02/2019 13:23

It could have been a new camera installed. This happened to me once and I know I got flashed, and everyone else did too. Nothing came through the post. They were just testing it

DGRossetti · 18/02/2019 13:24

I drove home with a friend last week who was completely oblivious to the fact that some duel carriageways can have a lower speed limit than 70mph. This explains why they have done 3 speed awareness courses.

And clearly paid no attention in any of them. Presumably a senior manager then.

AllPizzasGreatAndSmall · 18/02/2019 13:25

A dual carriageway has a central reservation, otherwise it is a single carriageway - the number of lanes is irrelevant.

PhannyMcNee · 18/02/2019 13:25

A30 is dual carriageway with National Speed Limit (central reservation) from M5 at Exeter all the way to Carland Cross near Truro.

M3lon · 18/02/2019 13:25

I've definitely been camera flashed when not speeding. I didn't hear anything about it...presumably the photo showed I wasn't speeding!

There is always a tolerance on these things!

KittyLane1 · 18/02/2019 13:25

Absolutely not making excuses, if I was accidently speeding then I was speeding and that's that. Having looked into it more closely I am 99.9% sure I was within the speed limit.

2 fixed cameras east bound but none west bound. They do have mobile cameras frequently parked up in lay bys.

Dh drives it weekly and I drove it myself last Friday.

Mmmmbrekkie · 18/02/2019 13:29

National speed limit is 60 i thought

KittyLane1 · 18/02/2019 13:31

Dreams I was driving Exeter to Redruth, there was a roundabout then down to single carriageway.

OlennasWimple · 18/02/2019 13:31

"It was dark and I was driving an unknown road so I thought I'd travel at the top of the possible speed limit options"

Hmm

No, not the best defence, is it?!

SoupDragon · 18/02/2019 13:34

so I thought I'd travel at the top of the possible speed limit options

No, she thought she'd drive below what she thought the speed limit was.
