Does anyone have a child who hates having their nails cut!

My 7 year old just had a total meltdown about having his toenails. Normally he moans but let's me do it. He's quite sensory and will brush past something and say it hurts. I even tried to bribe him with biscuit! Managed to do 3 nails and now he's hiding from me!!!

Copying my post from a thread about nail cutting the other day!

Ds (8) is very resistant. After years of battles we now have an agreed plan - he has one nail cut in the morning and one at night, at the same time as teeth cleaning (which was the mother of all battles for years, but is now ok....ish).

Before cutting, I put pressure on the nail for a few seconds....this seems to help with whatever it is about the sensation of clipping/cutting that upsets him.

To clean his nails we use a white nail pencil, sometimes he does this himself (he likes sticking a normal pencil in there at school....so they look bloody filthy!)

This all happens in front of the TV or iPad, and I set a visual timer for 4 mins (this covers teeth, clipping a nail and cleaning them) With this he can see it's going to be over soon.

It's an almighty bloody faff, but it gets done (mostly!)

They are softer after a bath - dk if that helps at all

Could he do it himself? He might be happier if he's in control of it, with supervision.

My ds who's 6 has sensory issues and absolutely hates his nails cut. Unfortunately they grow ridiculously fast too. He says it terrifies him. The same for hair cut he says it hurts. He has learned that it has to be done and he sits on my knee and sort of buries himself in me while I get it done, for some reason it's the little toes he hates the most! He's so relieved afterwards, usually rewarded with chocolate buttons. Not ideal but it gets the job done.

Ds is like this. I do it whilst he is asleep. He once let me do it with scissors instead of clippers.

Da has sensory issues and hates having his nails cut. We have overcome the screaming and kicking by counting to 10 as we cut them. We have taught him that we will stop when we get to 10 (so he knows that it will end and when.) He's learnt that if he is still we count quicker (as we can cut them quicker!)
