Going to Manchester next week with dd1 for a university interview and am hoping to visit the Victoria Wood exhibition in Bury while I'm there.

How far is Manchester university from the main station (Picadilly)? How do I get to Bury from there?

To get to bury from picadilly get the tram to bury. It's now a zoned system so you need a zone 4 Get off at bury interchange which is last stop. On the interchange go to bus entrance cross at crossing and the museum is just there.

You'd get a tram (Metrolink). Bury doesn't have a train station.

There is lots to see in Manchester near the unis. If you are just waiting for a few hours and need to be back to meet her, that will be easier. Bury might be better as a separate half day or day trip.

Someone who is still in the area will be more exact on the times but depending which uni building it is (they are quite spread out) it might be about 10-20 mins walk to get to the tram.

Manchester Uni about 25 minute walk from Piccadilly train station. There is a bus - 147 - that goes from the train station to the University. Alternatively, walk from the train station to Piccadilly Gardens bus station (about 5 mins) and get any number of buses from there - 41, 42, 43, 143 etc. Bus takes about 10 mins.

To get to Bury from the University just go back into the City Centre and get the tram from either the train station or Piccadilly Gardens.

Get to Manchester Oxford Rd station and the Uni is right there

Just a reminder bury museum has very reduced opening hours and doesn't open Monday. Wouldn't like you to go all that way to just stand outside so check if it's open before you set off

Thank you all, really helpful.

Can you pay with cash on the buses and trams?

Get off at Oxford Rd station, that's right next to the uni.

All of the above advice is correct , I would second making bury at least a half day trip. The market there is great and right next to the tram stop.
The tram from picadilly gardens will take about half a hour to get to Bury, they run every 10mins or more often during rush hour.
You can pay cash or contactless on trams and buses . I would highly recommend you pay for a bus and tram ticket as this will work out much cheaper.

I will look up the prices . . . . . .

iklboo · 19/02/2019 13:44

You can't pay cash on trams but there are ticket machines at the stations.

Ok from memory I think it will cost you about £2 each way on the bus from Piccadilly gardens to uni but this does depend on what bus you get on. ( blue magic bus cheepest ) they run very often
A tram from picadilly to bury will be about £4.50 single, £7 for all day or you can get a bus and tram ticket combine for £7.80 .
With this you can get off and on as many buses and trams as you want all day long just don't lose the ticket !
