Can vitamin D pills make you happy?

Just that really! I’d been feeling down and depressed, lethargic and lacking the oomph to do anything. My —doctor— mother suggested vitamin d pills. So I got some off ebay, “super strength”.

Been taking them a week, and now feel so much more energetic and ready to get off my arse and do something Grin

Is it the vit d? Or is it the placebo!

Interesting. I also feel really sad, sluggish and low in the winter. I asked my GP to check my levels but she (quite correctly I'm sure) said they don't routinely check vit D levels as most patients are deficient in the UK. I take 20 micrograms daily from Holland and Barrett but I'm wondering if I should buy high strength ones now after reading this. Any advice anyone?

greenelephantscarf · 17/02/2019 13:49

yes they can, but it's more like low energy due to deficiency = low mood.

I agree that drs are often too quick prescribing antidepressants. ideally they should run blood tests to rule out deficiencies (d3, b12, iron) and thyroid tests that can present very similar to depression,

OP I think @wowfudge meant "who cares if it's the placebo effect or not, you feel better which is great!" Rather than "who cares you feel better" a comma would have helped!

I'm definitely getting some Vit D, I need something to pep me up. Thanks for posting Smile

Blimey OP - I wouldn't come on your thread and imply I didn't give a monkeys @MummyDummy is right! I meant, does it matter if it's the placebo effect if you are feeling better?! Fudge off yourself!

I got my recent bottle in Holland and Barret in the penny sale

Glitterbugle · 17/02/2019 15:10

I got tested recently and my number was about 42 which the doctor said was classed as adequate but on the low side so I’m taking 2000 a day OTC. Have been doing so for over 2 months and still feel absolutely shit - should I be taking more do you think?

Ribbonsonabox · 17/02/2019 15:15

I felt loads better after starting liquid iron supplements! So I can believe it might be the vit d. You never realise how much nutritional stuff can effect you psychologically and your energy levels it's amazing!

I have chronic vitamin d deficiency and take it regularly, upping my dose when I get symptomatic (aching joints, lethargic). I had gone through every test in the book and was under the care of rheumatology on the cusp of some hard core meds before a physio asked if I'd had it checked. A trip to the GP revealed I hadn't and it was in my boots. I did ignore the diet 'advice' from the rotund practice nurse (eat more margarine and cereal - can't stand either) and found OTC high strength worked very well. It's supposed to have positive effects for all kinds of illness including for some types of cancers.

The Safe upper limit is 4000 units per day or 100mcg.

Vitamin D is a fat soluble vitamin it stays in your body and causes problems if you take too much.

Only take more than the safe upper limit if you are getting it on prescription!!!!

Somewhereovertheroad · 17/02/2019 18:26

@GinaCarbonara I suspect you are taking 8000 units not mcg per day.

There is a huge difference between units and mcg. Please be careful. You could do real harm by overdosing!

Arghh that should read unless you are getting it on prescription!

GinaCarbonara · 17/02/2019 19:19

Yes 800IU, SS recommended by my surgeon. Sorry I'm on a bunch of vitamins and get the different measurements confused, but not the actual dose I'm taking. Just what it's called.
