I was doing that dialect quiz and selected Granny which apparently is nearly unique to Scotland and (mainly Northern) Ireland.

I'm from the south west.

What do you call your parent's mother and roughly where are you from?

Granny here in Surrey. However my Granny and my Grandad were born in Scotland so that might have influenced it.

hoochymamgu · 16/02/2019 19:20

Fathers mother was grandma.
From Kent originally.

DaphneduM · 16/02/2019 19:21

I called mine Grandma, my mum was Granny to my daughter, and I'm soon to be Granny to my grandson expected in June - south west.

MissCalamity · 16/02/2019 19:22

Grandma - Mum's mum
Nanna - Dad's mum
North West

sar302 · 16/02/2019 19:23

I had a nanny (mums mum), and a grandma (dad's). Originally from the midlands. Now my mum is nanny to our little boy and MIL is grandma.

Smoothyloopy · 16/02/2019 19:25

Granny. Cornwall

HogMother · 16/02/2019 19:30

Nanna - mums side
Grandma - dads side
Gran - dads paternal grandmother
I’m in Yorkshire

Bippityboo2 · 16/02/2019 19:31

Gran - SW Scotland

Natsku · 16/02/2019 19:31

Mum's mum - Mummi (Finnish though)
Dad's mum - Granny - dad is Scottish so I expect it came from that as I grew up in Wiltshire, and later Suffolk.

Yabbers · 16/02/2019 19:31

One was grandma, the other was Granny. We're in Scotland but Grandma was from England.

Yabbers · 16/02/2019 19:33

Posher people go with Granny

Nope. Granny very definitely isn't posh where I'm from. Grandma is posher.

redcaryellowcar · 16/02/2019 19:34

I know my grandmothers as nana and then their first name (sussex). My children refer to theirs as grandma and nana, I think as someone else said granny is quite Home Counties, as there are a lot of employed nannies eg child care so nanny is confusing!

Boom76 · 16/02/2019 19:42

**sorry, misread and thought you were asking about parents' parents not just mothers.

weebarra · 16/02/2019 20:10

Granny here - I'm Scottish. I'd echo what a PP said about it being hard to find "granny" cards in shops!

Fantababy · 16/02/2019 20:12
