I was doing that dialect quiz and selected Granny which apparently is nearly unique to Scotland and (mainly Northern) Ireland.

I'm from the south west.

What do you call your parent's mother and roughly where are you from?

Dad's mum was nanny, mum's mum was Mum (but she was Caribbean so different rules Wink) - Londoner/Essex

maxiflump1 · 16/02/2019 18:31

In from the south west and say granny as well.

BertrandRussell · 16/02/2019 18:32

Granny is an interesting one. It might be unique to Scotland in the quiz, but it is also the poshest of all the grandmother names.

MunchMunch · 16/02/2019 18:35

Nana - north east
My dc call my dm either nana or nanny and mil is just nana.

Sockwomble · 16/02/2019 18:36

Nanny then nan when I got older- Midlands. My mom is nana to her grandchildren - Midlands. Dh had a grandma and a gran - north west.

Fetching · 16/02/2019 18:42

Granny definitely not unique to Scotland and NI.

I say granny and I'm from Dublin. although neither of said grannies were Dubliners. In my experience granny is the most commonly used term for grandmother in Ireland.

My mum is Grandma to my son

NoParticularPattern · 16/02/2019 18:53

Grandma on mums side and nana on dads. My mum is grandma to my DC but my MIL is gran. My husband had a granny and a grandma. North Yorkshire all of us

Boulezvous · 16/02/2019 18:54

My parents mother would be my Great Granny.

happymummy12345 · 16/02/2019 18:55

Nanny until a certain age, nan after that.

happymummy12345 · 16/02/2019 18:58

I'm from east London, all my family refers to their parents mum as Nan.
When I had my baby my mum was nanny. Whereas my husband is from the north west and his mum prefers grandma. It is strange for me because I'm not used to calling a parents mum anything other than nanny or nan. So to hear my husband call his mum grandma to our son isn't something I'm used to (I don't mean it disrespectfully, just different to what I'm used to).

RainyDaysAndTuesfays · 16/02/2019 19:00

Mine were all called Nana and if I needed to differentiate they were Nana Surname. We were East Anglia, one nana living in NZ.

My dc have a Nana (my mum) - East Anglos, Granny (DP's mum - NW) abdgreat Grandma (my nana- EA). They all chose what they wanted to be called. They also have a NZ Nana.

NeverSayFreelance · 16/02/2019 19:05
