I was doing that dialect quiz and selected Granny which apparently is nearly unique to Scotland and (mainly Northern) Ireland.

I'm from the south west.

What do you call your parent's mother and roughly where are you from?

I think what I meant is that when it's used outside of NI and Scotland, then it's generally seen as a posh title. But it's not a hard and fast rule.

Juanbablo · 16/02/2019 17:04

Mum's mum is grandma. Dad's mum is nanny. I'm from Berkshire.

Nuyearnume · 16/02/2019 17:07

I had two granny’s and my mammy is called granny by my nieces and nephews. We are all Irish

scaryteacher · 16/02/2019 17:08

One was Grandma, the other was Nana.

Believability · 16/02/2019 17:08

Grandma here. My mother’s worst nightmare or insult would be to be a Nan.

My dad is very much Grandpa and never ever a Grandad.

All my friends parents are grandma and grandpa too apart from one or 2 Nanna and Papas

happypotamus · 16/02/2019 17:17

Grandma. We grew up in the Midlands.

I now live in West Midlands. My DC have Grandma (my mum) and Nanny (DH's mum)

InfiniteCurve · 16/02/2019 17:19

Both grandmothers were Grandma Surname, one was originally from Newcastle and the other London. My paternal grandmother (London) lived with us and,if we weren't trying to distinguish one from the other outside the family,we called her Gran.
One grandfather was Grandpa, and the other was Grandad - my Dad chose to be Grandad but both mine and DHs mothers were also Grandmas.Which now makes intergenerational conversations a bit confusing.....

Crinkle77 · 16/02/2019 17:21

NW England. My mum's mum was grandma and dads mum was gran/granny. Think I am unusual as most other people where I'm from say Nan.

Slowknitter · 16/02/2019 17:23

I had a granny and a nanny. I'm SE England/Home Counties. My posher friends had grannies, my less posh ones generally had nanas.

CluedoAddict · 16/02/2019 17:29

Nan - West Midlands.

AnnaComnena · 16/02/2019 17:31

When I was a child, Nana/Nanny were seen as names used by very young children who couldn't yet manage to say Grandma/Granny. A school aged child would have considered it babyish to say Nana or Nanny. In my experience.

In my family we said Grandma. I never knew my grandfather, but my older cousins who did know him said Granddad. Other grandparents not in the picture.

London/SE.

Wendywoo1000 · 16/02/2019 17:33

Mine were my nain.

chipshopElvis · 16/02/2019 17:43

Home counties and Granny, but family is from Northern Ireland and husband's family from Scotland.

TrendyNorthLondonTeen · 16/02/2019 17:45

Granny, Scotland. If I'd ever called her Nanny she would have buried me.

LifeOfBriony · 16/02/2019 17:50

I had two Grandmas. London area but with one parent from the North. My DM chose to be Grandma and DH's DM chose to be Nanny - she had grown up in the London area.

yogima · 16/02/2019 17:50

I am Scottish with Scottish parents and grandparents all living/lived in Scotland.
Gran and Granny for us.
Granny was most definitely not a posh choice here.

My gran was the younger of the two by quite some years so 'granny' always felt like 'wee old granny' as my granny was wee and very old fashioned. My gran in comparison, was much younger and modern.

But I quite like the idea of being a granny though and reclaiming it as the cool young granny I will obviously be Grin

barbiegrl · 16/02/2019 17:55

Dads parents were Nanna and Ganga, mums parents were Yia yia and Bapoo. My kids have Yia yia 2 x Bapoo and a Pop Pop

TellerTuesday4EVA · 16/02/2019 18:04

youngestisapsycho · 16/02/2019 18:11

Nanny/Nan - from London

MyBreadIsEggy · 16/02/2019 18:12

Paternal grandmother is “Nan” or “Nana” (East of England)
Maternal grandmother is “Babcia” (Polish)

HalfBloodPrincess · 16/02/2019 18:15

Nan/nanny. East London.

My nan is still alive so the dc call them nanny firstname to differentiate

HappyDinosaur · 16/02/2019 18:15

For me it was:
Mum's mum - Granny
Dad's mum - Grandma

Dd uses:
My mum - Granny
Husband's mum - Nanny

(South West)

TeacupDrama · 16/02/2019 18:18

my grandparents are all dead but called them Granny and Grandad both sets(west Midlands) my DD calls my parents Grandma and Grandpa we live in Scotland, her other grandparents are dead but she called Dh's mum Granny

SockQueen · 16/02/2019 18:21

I only had one, she was Grandma. We lived in Shropshire but both my parents' families were originally from elsewhere.

Bezalelle · 16/02/2019 18:29

I had Nanna Dad's-Surname and Nanna Mum's-Maiden-Name (northwest).

Future DCs will have Nanna (my mother) and Savta (DP's mother - Hebrew) or maybe Bubby, depending on what she prefers!
