Car Servicing for a noob

CordeliaGoode · 14/02/2019 18:20

Hi everyone. My car is due it’s first service and I am shocked at the cost, £250!!!!!

I bought the car on finance so I assumed that I would have to get it serviced at the Volvo dealership where I got it from. Is this true or can I get it serviced at my local garage? I really wasn’t expecting such a high cost, please help!

Is it under warranty, if so , that may require you to use a main dealer or it invalidates it. I get breakdown cover as long as the dealer services it. Some brands offer a service plan with monthly payments to spread the cost.

It depends on your finance plan. If it’s a pcp lease type they quite often have stipulations that it needs main dealer servicing.
If it’s a hp/ loan type your normally free to do what you want. But you’ll need to check.
My awesome local mechanic, the minor services start at £90 odd quid, but his hourly rate is £60 and main dealers are probably double.

As long as your local mechanic uses original parts your warranty is valid

Thank you! I was thinking about getting another quote, calling another Volvo dealership and seeing if they could match the price?

You could try, but if you have to get it serviced at a Volvo dealership to keep your warranty validated then they may not be able to.
I drive a Kia and have to get my car serviced at a Kia dealership so I don't void my warranty. Kia actually set the rates themselves so the franchises don't have a say in it.

I feel your pain exactly. We lease hire our car & have booked it for a service next week..

I was genuinely shocked to find out that it's £230!!! Shock

That's Vauxhall so think all the main 'proper' dealerships charge an arm & leg. Have to do it through them rather than our lovely local mechanic who would charge £80. Sad Boo.

By law, automakers and dealerships are not allowed to make you perform regular maintenance at a dealership for a new-car warranty to remain valid. In other words, you're free by law to get oil changes, tire rotations and other regular maintenance performed by just about any mechanic, and the automaker and dealership will still have to honor the new-car warranty. but they advise you to keep the invoices and receipts to prove the work was carried out if you need to claim against the warranty.

Do you have an independent Volvo garage nearby? They can be much cheaper.

We have Volvos but have found that our local garage (who is excellent for small jobs, MOTs etc) can’t service the cars because he doesn’t have the Volvo software needed. We take it to an (excellent) independent about an hour’s drive away. They charge a fraction of the cost of servicing at the dealership.

I have a service plan for a pretty small monthly cost that covers my service and MOT at the main dealer it does take the worry out of it.

Thank you so much for your help guys! I’ve found an independent garage and I’m going to get a quote tomorrow Smile
