Platinum rings getting bashed so much!

My husband bought me a ring for Christmas following the birth of our now 1 year old.

It's platinum and it's already so scratched and got tiny dents.

Is this normal?

Found this on my jewellers website - Platinum is less hard than 18ct White Gold. It therefore picks up scratches more easily. It is however less malleable, making it ideal for setting diamonds. The more rigid nature of Platinum makes it a more secure setting for gemstones. It is more difficult to bend out of shape. 18ct Gold on the other hand scratches less easily because the metal is harder. Platinum is a denser metal than 18ct White Gold. It will lose less metal over years of wear than 18ct Gold, but both metals are extremely hard-wearing.

I've got two platinum rings and they have fared pretty well over 8 years - so for yours to be scratched after a couple of months doesn't sound right. Can you take it back to the jeweller and query it? Platinum isn't cheap so I'd expect more.

Good to know I'll be losing less metal over the years. I do rather like the look of patina, maybe it's still just a bit too new at the moment

I'm very surprised at that for platinum tbh, just looked at mine which are nigh on 10 yrs old and there is the odd very tiny mark but certainly no scratches or dents.

I thought that the metal wasn’t lost in a platinum ring - just moved around iyswim? So you can get it repolished

Actually now i think of it, I do vaguely remember thinking my ring was getting scratched when I first got it but yes now it is more of a patina.

The backs of my wedding and engagement rings must have patinated because they look less scratched than before. I'm sure now that my new ring will look better the older it gets
