Has no one else noticed that 'pancake day' (Shrove Tuesday) isn't until 5th March this year?

It just feels wrong.

It's all very late this year!

WithAllIntenseAndPurposes · 12/02/2019 20:57

Yes! Why is that? Is it because of when Easter is? It's not right imo

AlpacaPicnic · 12/02/2019 20:57

It's as if it's linked to Easter somehow...

TheFuckfaceWhisperer · 12/02/2019 20:58

My Facebook memories are telling me it was this week a few times so I checked the other day and saw it was March 5th! I said to myself, "Bloody hell, that's late!"

AlpacaPicnic · 12/02/2019 20:58

If you want pancakes, just make pancakes... You don't have to wait...

MayFayner · 12/02/2019 20:59

Blame the moon.

ScarlettDarling · 12/02/2019 20:59

It does feel weird being in March but yes, it's because Easter is late this year. Pancake Tuesday is the day before Lent starts (the 40 days before Easter) and Easter isn't until 21st April this year.

Bestseller · 12/02/2019 21:01

In my memory it was always in Feb HT but that cant be right because it's the last day before lent (pancakes to use up the fats in the house) which is the 40 days before Easter. Easter is really late this year - something to do with the moon

bibbitybobbityyhat · 12/02/2019 21:01

Yes, it's exceptionally late this year. I think 21st April is the latest date Easter Sunday can ever be, and my brother has some sort of interesting fact about his friend whose birthday is 21st April and he's in his 60s and Easter Sunday has only fallen on his birthday once before in his lifetime. Or something like that Grin.

UrsulaPandress · 12/02/2019 21:02

I was convinced it was going to be this week and I could start my pre holiday diet.

Shakes fist at moon.

exwhyzed · 12/02/2019 21:04

Yes yes I know why. Doesn't mean that it being in March rather than February can't feel weird.

Although google tells me this also happened in 2014 which I do not remember.

Easter falls on the first full moon after the Spring equinox, which is March 20th/21st. This means that the date of Easter can vary by up to a month or so. The earliest date it can be is March 22nd.

ChippyMinton · 12/02/2019 21:19

2014 was an odd year for the school Easter holidays. Some areas had a two week break, then back to school and a long weekend including Good Friday and Easter Monday.

Hullabalooo · 12/02/2019 21:22

Was gearing up for it you be tomorrow. How can it be 5th March?!

hugoagogo · 12/02/2019 21:24

You guys are making me hungry!

WithAllIntenseAndPurposes · 12/02/2019 21:25

We have pancakes quite a lot. Cheap easy and my three year old loves them

NameChangeNugget · 12/02/2019 21:26

I thought the same too & also moaned to a colleague that Esster was late. I’m officially middle aged Grin

NameChangeNugget · 12/02/2019 21:27

Easter not Rantzen

hugoagogo · 12/02/2019 21:27

Maybe I will have some in the morning...Grin

Pixie2015 · 12/02/2019 21:31

I have after buying all the ingredients and toppings at weekend ready for today what was I thinking !

spugzbunny · 12/02/2019 21:32

@Hullabalooo

You were gearing up for it to be tomorrow? On a Wednesday? Shrove Tuesday?

elQuintoConyo · 12/02/2019 21:34

Easter Sunday is the first Sunday after the first full moon after the vernal equinox.

So it varies from year to year, nothing to do with Hey Zoos!

soulrider · 12/02/2019 21:34

Pancake day is 47 days before Easter. It's 40 days from Shrove Tuesday to Palm Sunday

TeenTimesTwo · 12/02/2019 21:36

iirc Sundays don't count when counting 40 days, or something?
(I remember something on The Archers once where someone gave something up, then discovered it was more than 40 days, then starting drinking or whatever on the Sundays)

TitchyP · 12/02/2019 21:37

Yes! I didn't believe my Echo dot when I asked it this morning (as I thought it might be today!) and had to google instead. I'm in my 40s and don't ever remember it being in March before.
