Hi, has anyone found any of these that are nice and don't cause stomach cramps and bloating?
I don't like breakfast so thought a shake would be a good to have in the morning, hopefully one that can keep me full until lunch, i tried slimfast last Wednesday and Thursday and my stomach has been agony since that i'm having to take Buscopan to relieve, too scared to try anymore!
I have tried not eating until lunch instead but feel sick by 11am

Hello. Could it be the milk that has caused the bloating rather than the slim fast powder? I make my shake up with soya or almond milk. Hope you feel better soon.

SpringForEver · 12/02/2019 15:13

I think a lot of them have bloating agents in order to give you a full feeling, any ingredient with a name ending in gum is something to avoid although they may have changed them since I last looked.

I bought some stuff that was mentioned on here and it was not only foul, but the company either didn't understand or wouldn't understand when I asked for the ingredients list, I was just referred to the nutritional information instead. It was some kind of gritty, grainy stuff with crushed up seeds and flavourings. If I remember what it was I will let you know. It might have been supposedly a health shake but it certainly put me off food.

SpringForEver · 12/02/2019 15:18

Just looked a Slimfast, it has cellulose gel gum arabic, guar gum and xanthan gum, although it might be one of the other ingredients you are struggling with, like the many sweeteners. I can't cope with sweeteners, similar situation to yours.

It is difficult to find a ready made mix that doesn't have this effect. Could you blend something yourself?

I have a shake every morning made with 1 frozen banana, 125ml coconut milk and a handful of spinach. It's healthy and filling. You could try it? Or maybe get some protein shake powder? I think it's a bit less likely to cause bloating than slimfast.

ZanyMobster · 12/02/2019 15:32

I have a herbalife shake every morning, makes a massive difference and I was very sceptical.

I have it with either coconut milk or with water plus a scoop of a different protein powder they do. I never get bloated any more.

needsleepzzz · 12/02/2019 15:55

Thanks everyone, i will try the banana version, would it work with added strawberries? @secretlifeofme
Will also take a look at herbalife, can i buy that in Holland and Barrett or Boots?
I did a bit of reading and a lot of people suggested the sweetener in slimfast could be the problem, i can have milk on cereal without any issues.

I would be interested to know how you get on needsleepzzz

needsleepzzz · 12/02/2019 16:04

Think i'm going to try the banana version first, i have lactofree milk just incase and will chuck in some frozen mango/pineapple :-)

Purition shakes are not bad, they are not very sweet at all, you add fruit like banana and they have more natural ingredients like flaxseed and ground almonds. I make them up with half a banana and unsweetened soya milk and they are about 250 cals.

needsleepzzz · 12/02/2019 16:15

Thanks @NannyR, i did look at those but want a sample first, the 6 pack sample has 4 flavours i don't like Grin fussy i know.
I also found a brand called Cute that i am tempted with cutenutrition.com/search?q=sachet

I like the ASDA ones. Never had a problem with them.

Foslady · 12/02/2019 17:25

Check the protein content if you want to stay fuller longer.
And at a guess it will be Konjac fibre (glucomannan) the the op was referring to (it’s the only thing EFSA says you can use to state weight loss, it gels up and makes you feel full)

ZanyMobster · 12/02/2019 19:23

I have tried Cute, they taste really good. Not quite as much protein as Herbalife but they are ok.

Secretlifeofme · 12/02/2019 22:46

@needsleepzzz I'm sure it would work with any fruit, but it's important to use coconut milk for the protein and fat, not any other milk. Otherwise it won't be as filing.

Let us know how you get on :)

Norma27 · 13/02/2019 06:19

Herbalife is an awful pyramid scheme. Honestly please don’t give them your money.
Apart from that I wound honestky try making your own. Good luck!

SheWoreBlueVelvet · 13/02/2019 06:25

If you don’t like breakfast, why are you having a shake? Just go on through until lunch.

ZanyMobster · 13/02/2019 11:26

Herbalife is only a pyramid scheme if you get involved in selling etc. Buying the odd shake isn't going to make a difference to the OP, I do laugh when I see all these people pop up on facebook suddenly hashtagging herbalife, 99% of them will sell it then realise they won't make any money.

You really ought to have breakfast but steer clear of sugary stuff. Have eggs or something with good fats/protein etc, it will stop cravings and you won't overeat.

SpringForEver · 14/02/2019 10:26

I might be alone on this, but I found that lacto free milk gave me a dodgy gut, bloaty and uncomfortable. I am also susceptible to the same things as you OP, so take it easy until you know the milk is OK for you.

babysharkah · 14/02/2019 10:31

Myprotein ones are the best I've found - meal replacement not the protein ones they're just awful.

needsleepzzz · 14/02/2019 16:58

@sheworebluevelvet if i don't have anything i feel sick by about 10:30-11, plus i thought it was good for you to have breakfast of some sort? might be wrong there.
Going to buy banana's and frozen fruit this weekend and try making my own, i have a lactofree milk that needs using but after that i will try the coconut milk.
The best thing i have found to fill me up is cheese on toast but pretty sure that's not good to have every day (more's the pity :-)), egg's/porridge i'm hungry again by about 10:30.
Thanks all for the great tips
