Ice-Skating & Skiing - Possibly Daft Question

I absolutely hate ice-skating - I can't balance and hate the wobbly feeling. I'm starting to panic about my first ever ski-trip and wondering whether my lack of ice-skating prowess means learning to ski will be difficult?!!

Please tell me there is no link whatsoever! Actually, please just be honest. Thanks!

@magimedi
I used to ice skate with reasonable proficiency years ago, but went back on the ice after about twenty years off and fell on my arse! I found it was like ‘riding a bike’ in that I remembered how to skate, but was not confident and far more aware of how much it hurt to fall on ice, and the potential for real damage because of being older IYSWIM.
I was with a young relative, who had never ice skated and was desperate to have a ho, so I had to put a very brave face on it, so as not to spoil it for her. Luckily a friendly young lad came over and ‘took over’, bless his cotton socks, and we had a great time. I was doing ok after about twenty minutes, but certainly not chasing around the way I used to do!

Flowers FadedRed. You've made my mind up for me - I ain't going to do it! Had too many issues with bad back which I have just got better. Not worth it!

I'm a terrible skier but a good ice-skater.
Next time we go skiing I'd like to try cross-country, you get to see all the beautiful scenery but with less terror.

magi, I still have my ice skates (proper ones!) from 40 years ago. But I think I've realised that it's probably not worth trying to skate again now (it must have been about 30 years since I last skated). I can quite imagine : skate : ice : bum these days!

I'm terrible at ice-skating but OK at skiing. I've had a lot more practice skiing. Once when I did cross-country skiing, the instructor said it helps if you're good at ice-skating, but I think there is less similarity with downhill skiing. Good balance definitely helps with skiing.

Competent skater - learning jumps and spins.

Best I can do on skis is snowplough turns.

Skis have edges though and last time I tried I wasn’t as strong a skater so maybe I’d do better now...
