I have no excuse, my brain is just fried....

So....

HeyNannyNanny has bought a roll of patterned paper to cover her notebooks.

The covers that need covering are A4 (so 297mm x 210mm).

The roll of patterned paper is 760mm x 50m.

How many notebooks can HeyNannyNanny cover with one roll of paper?

I get 609. But I just put my shampoo in the fridge and tomato sauce in the shower so I'm a twat.

Help!

You can definately cover more than you need.

mummmy2017 · 09/02/2019 18:33

Yes.. same thought...
Hang on....
Open book is... 420 by 300...
Which means if you cut the paper in two widths....
So cut 420 by 50M. In 300 section..
. 16... Book. 420 by 200 left...
Then. 300 by 50M.

11 book... 300 by 380. Left...
Left over is 40 by 50M...

So 27. Book covered...

HeyNannyNanny · 09/02/2019 18:34

Ok 504 is a number I like.

As the roll is £74.52 plus VAT that then means each notebook cover is 15p, or 18p inc VAT

WinterHeatWave · 09/02/2019 18:35

Only if you WANT to cover 500!!!
If you only want 100, the price goes up to closer to £1 per book Grin

HeyNannyNanny · 09/02/2019 18:36

Why do you want to recover 504 note books?
I own a stationery company, despite my inability to do Maths Blush

I initially will need to cover about 5000 notebooks.well my assistant will —mwahahaha— as I have a FT job outside the uk

I think 574

760 would make 2 x 210 + 1 x 297

So you would get 168 lengthways from 2 rows
238 from one

Total 574.

But there's little margin for error

PestyMachtubernahme · 09/02/2019 18:40

Remember to cut with a scalpel or some such thing.

mummmy2017 · 09/02/2019 18:42

Woops. 1000 mm to a meter not a 100...
....
Open book is... 420 by 300...
Which means if you cut the paper in two widths....
So cut 420 by 50M. In 300 section..needed
. 166... Books 420mm by 200mm left...
Then. 300 by 50M. 420 section needed
119 books... 300mm by 200mm.. Left...
Left over is 40mm by 50M...

So 285 Book covered...

WinterHeatWave · 09/02/2019 18:42

Ohh, nice GottenGottenGotten
I amend my answer to 574.

HeyNannyNanny · 09/02/2019 18:46

@GottenGottenGotten yesss!

The covers that need covering are A4 (so 297mm x 210mm)

Are you only covering half of the books?

GottenGottenGotten · 09/02/2019 18:54

Op updated to say And it needs to cover an A4 sheet only, no overlap or give needed (as the A4 itself it's actually cut down

mummmy2017 · 09/02/2019 18:56

Gotten thing you have made a .mistake...
You need a double side. Of the width to cover an A4 book ..
210 +210. Is 420...
So. 420. By. 297. To cover each book.

Bombardier25966 · 09/02/2019 19:01

Is there a demand for books covered in wallpaper?

I thought that was a school kid thing!

mummmy2017 · 09/02/2019 19:02

Just seen update...

A4 sheets need....
Yes the sections into 210+ 210+ 297... 43. Piece left.... All 50 meters long

borntobequiet · 09/02/2019 19:04

I’ll give it to my class on Monday if you like.
You need to think about how the rectangular covers are oriented.
There will always be wastage in these sort of probs, you can’t just do area of roll divided by area of notebook cover.
Fun stuff.

HeyNannyNanny · 09/02/2019 19:08

Bombardier25966 it's not wallpaper, that was just the easiest way of explaining it. It's actual a special scratch resistant, waterproof coating which is patterned.

@borntobequiet feel free!

Sorry it will be Tuesday when we do area!
Monday we sortout our metric conversions.
I do like RL problems! But not for me on a Sat night!

runoutofnamechanges · 09/02/2019 19:45

I agree with GottenGottenGotten you can get 574 A4 sheets out of the roll but... it depends on the pattern repeat.

Does the pattern work both vertically and horizontally so it doesn't matter which way the A4 sheet is oriented? And does the pattern need to be placed so it looks nice?

For example, if it is something large and complicated like this William Morris print, obviously you can only cut the A4 sheet from the roll in one orientation. And you probably wouldn't want to cut it out so the birds were decapitated at the top of the page or off centre.
