Alcohol and hives - can you be allergic to wine?

I've just drunk 2 glasses of red wine , first since Xmas. I've now got a line of hive type white lumps on my arm and a few on my tummy. Am I now allergic to wine??

It’s probably sulphites

Can you be allergic to them? The lumps aren't itching but they are very defined. I've taken a piriton!

Step away from the bottle forever!

doctorboo · 09/02/2019 04:53

Try organic wine. Aldi do a bottle of red for £5 which I can drink - no hives or other reactions.

Girlundercover · 09/02/2019 05:29

Yes you can be allergic to sulfates, which are in most wines.

ineedaknittedhat · 09/02/2019 07:30

Organic wines can be a bit easier to tolerate.

Decormad38 · 09/02/2019 07:33

I get those with certain red wines. I now know which ones give me them so I avoid those wines.

Lidlfix · 09/02/2019 08:07

I can react with wheezing, swollen lips and tongue and face and neck looking burnt. It's the most first word allergy ever. It does mean I have to continue to try new wines for research purposes. Worse culprits for me are dark, strong, complex New World reds - European tends to be fine.

LizzieSiddal · 09/02/2019 08:09

Yes you can be allergic to wine. I have a fiend who’s very sick after about half a glass. He never used to be like this but it’s developed in the last couple of years.

He doesn’t touch the stuff now.

Blippityblip · 09/02/2019 08:10

Take a hay fever tablet normally works for me!

Cyw2018 · 09/02/2019 08:19

I get eczema (mostly on my hands) after drinking wine. I wake in the night scratching so much I nearly take the skin off!

SoyDora · 09/02/2019 08:36

I’ve randomly developed an allergy to alcohol since my third pregnancy! My face turns bright red/itchy/bumpy.
I was so looking forward to some nice wine after having the baby Sad

Fazackerley · 09/02/2019 08:41

I also get itchy and I get little itchy blisters on my fingers. I did dry January and forgot this side effect . I'm a bit gutted really

@Fazackerley I can drink 1-2 glasses of this stuff. It tastes very good too which was my main concern Blush 😂

You can be allergic to alcohol! Wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy though so I really hope it's not that 😬😬😬

GoldenBlue · 09/02/2019 17:33

Yes some wines use fish or hoof products as part of the filtration process. I'm allergic to fish and react to some wines. You can get vegan wines if that is the issue.
