Half birthdays

Settle a disagreement for me:

Half birthdays...for or against?

Today has been our ds 3 and a half birthday. He's had cake and a day of choosing what he wants to do, eat etc.

One of us was all for this. The other against it (but still enjoyed the cake!) and claim it's a fad that will disappear soon.

OP posts:

No it's not something we do

Thistles24 · 08/02/2019 22:09

Never been a thing in our house, but don’t see the harm in it at all, as long as it stays as cake and choosing activities, and not presents & parties

Grandadwasthatyou · 08/02/2019 22:10

I've never heard of it personally.

Good grief

Northernbeachbum · 08/02/2019 22:11

If we had a December or jan child we would do this so they get a proper separate event. Other than that not for us but each to their own

gamerchick · 08/02/2019 22:12

Do you do half birthdays for yourself? Hmm

Seriously man, have a word with yourself.

Anothertempusername · 08/02/2019 22:12

Wow.

Canshopwillshop · 08/02/2019 22:12

Not for us. Birthday has always meant just the anniversary of the day you were born.

Megan2018 · 08/02/2019 22:13

My relative has a half birthday because her father died on her 21st, so since then her birthday’s have been celebrated on the half.

I’ve never heard of anyone routinely doing it!

Petalflowers · 08/02/2019 22:13

Dc1 used to get a half-birthday present from a gp, but that’s because he’s a Christmas baby. Haven’t done it for dc2.we never made a big day of it.

Drogosnextwife · 08/02/2019 22:13

No it's really not a thing. You have one birthday, it is the day you are born and that is it!

FixTheBone · 08/02/2019 22:14

Nope.

Never heard of it. Sounds ridiculous.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 08/02/2019 22:15

God no!!!

palomapear · 08/02/2019 22:15

Only half birthdays? We like to celebrate the arrival of our darling child every 10 days.
We usually have a small champagne reception.

Hunkyd0ry · 08/02/2019 22:19

DDs godmother does it as DDs half birthday is on godmother’s birthday and as pp have said DD is a December birthday so they celebrate together. But cake and things- nope!

Aprilshowersarecomingsoon · 08/02/2019 22:19

Pfb?

meow1989 · 08/02/2019 22:22

No. I k now a few mums who did a 6 month birthday with a literal half cake to celebrate though

novasglowx · 08/02/2019 22:22

Seriously? Precious few people outside of close family even acknowledge kids actual birthdays. This does not need to be a thing. Unless I can celebrate being 29 and a half before I turn 30 Grin

BikeRunSki · 08/02/2019 22:22

My granny invented very informal half birthdays for me, as my birthday is in the late autumn and in term time, abd my sisters is in the summer holidays. My hand Birthday was also in the summer holidays. All we did was s picnic lunch in the garden or something. No presents, cake or anything. I don’t think I have celebrated my half birthday since I was about 8 and a half.

MayFayner · 08/02/2019 22:23

It was DS1’s half birthday recently. I just mentioned it to him and said how big he’s getting, now that he’s 4 and a half. That’s it, no cake or anything.

00100001 · 08/02/2019 22:25

No.

Seems ridiculous

JudgeRulesNutterButter · 08/02/2019 22:26

Guessing your username gives away which side you were on OP Grin

Lochroy · 08/02/2019 22:29

Definitely not.

PaulHollywoodsSexGut · 08/02/2019 22:30

Only acceptable if your birthday falls between 25 and 30 December or the first two weeks in Jan as having your birthday then is the shittest

LoniceraJaponica · 08/02/2019 22:30

Grin @palomapear

As far as I know only the queen has two birthdays in a year.
