Half birthdays

Settle a disagreement for me:

Half birthdays...for or against?

Today has been our ds 3 and a half birthday. He's had cake and a day of choosing what he wants to do, eat etc.

One of us was all for this. The other against it (but still enjoyed the cake!) and claim it's a fad that will disappear soon.

So a resounding no then. Thanks guys. Wonder if those who do do this have decided to hide away? Wink

Or perhaps nobody else does...Hmm

No we don’t in our house and we had a Christmas baby. I guess we’re lucky though as DD, who is now 9, loves having a Christmas birthday maybe we would have had half birthdays if she didn’t?

Ive never heard of it.

But then I have known couples do 6 month anniversary and 18 month anniversary (missing the point of it being annual) so I'm not surprised some people do want another excuse to create a non-event.

Don't get me wrong, I'm sure it's very nice but it feels a bit silly to me.

WorraLiberty · 08/02/2019 22:32

I think it's a load of self indulgent twaddle.

Some people are proper 'BirthdayZillas' anyway, without being brought up to think 'half birthdays' are also a thing.

AtrociousCircumstance · 08/02/2019 22:34

Surely you jest? Grin

seeingdots · 08/02/2019 22:35

Never heard of this. Seems fairly ridiculous.

Jessicabrassica · 08/02/2019 22:35

Dd is a Harry Potter fan and is proposing to celebrate turning 9 3/4 with her friends. I've never heard of half birthdays, sorry. Although my half birthday is Christmas so arguably, everyone celebrates mine!

ridiculousridiculousness · 08/02/2019 22:35

No jesting happening here.

No-one I know does.

OneWildNightWithJBJ · 08/02/2019 22:35

Never heard of having a half birthday! Even my brother whose birthday is Christmas Day doesn't have one.

PaulHollywoodsSexGut · 08/02/2019 22:36

Oh hang on...

Now I get you. No that’s daft.

I like to celebrate mine in July which is 6 months after the ACTUAL birthday plus it falls on Independence Day so any excuse for a party.

But I’m an adult and can choose to forfeit a real birthday for a fake one.

Giving kiddies two a year is asking for a world of pain, sorry Flowers

Maryann1975 · 08/02/2019 22:37

Nope, never heard of it. There’s 5 of us in our family, no way I’m introducing half birthdays in to our already very busy diary. Although it does sound a bit like one of my friends who has a ‘birthday week’, which I generally can not stand being part of (she has the whole week off work and last year we (her friends) were expected to take her actual birthday of so we can go out for lunch -err no! Expecting lots of surprises/treats etc from her family. She isn’t a spoilt brat any other time than her birthday week, but it was unbearable last year).

PolarBearDisguisedAsAPenguin · 08/02/2019 22:37

I do this but only for myself. Grin

MyNewBearTotoro · 08/02/2019 22:38

The only family I know who do this have a child with a life-limiting illness who is likely to die in childhood. In the first year they celebrated every month (he wasn’t expected to ever make it home) but now they celebrate his birthday every six months, they want to create lots of happy memories for him and his siblings.

Outside of this kind of scenario or a child being born on a date like Chrustmas day which overshadows their birthday I think the idea of celebrating a half birthday is a bit ridiculous.

LizB62A · 08/02/2019 22:38

I did it once when I was 49 and a half - my birthday is in the first week of January and I just got so tired of always having friends cry off as they were broke/on a diet/doing dry January, plus I was also usually also broke/on a diet Smile
So, 6 months before my 50th I had a lovely barbecue in my parents garden - everyone came and I'd definitely recommend it for special birthdays !

Boobiliboobiliboo · 08/02/2019 22:38

DH has a half birthday for significant ones because he has a truly awful birth date.

DD and I go out on our half birthday (born same day, different years) for tea and cake. We don’t make a big deal of it though.

JustHereForThePooStories · 08/02/2019 22:40

Ridiculous.

Where does it end- quarter birthdays, one-twelfth birthdays?

Vinorosso74 · 08/02/2019 22:41

Bloody hell I'm just over DD's annual birthday celebrations from last week! Certainly no half birthdays here apart from maybe a mention of it.

Neolara · 08/02/2019 22:41

Last year my ds had his party 6 months after his birthday. But that's because his birthday is a few days after Xmas so no one is around and I was just rubbish at getting round to organising anything earlier.

JustHereForThePooStories · 08/02/2019 22:42

DD and I... (born same day, different years)

Different years? You don’t say! Grin

Boobiliboobiliboo · 08/02/2019 22:44

Different years? You don’t say!

I know how pedantic folks on here can be. Wink

Grace212 · 08/02/2019 22:44

never heard of it

unless you count the Mad Hatter celebrating unbirthdays on the basis that you get 364 of those a year....

WorraLiberty · 08/02/2019 22:52

DD and I go out on our half birthday (born same day, different years) for tea and cake. We don’t make a big deal of it though.

Isn't going out for tea and cake making a big deal of it though? Confused

I mean, I've literally never even known it's been my 'half birthday'?

SleepingBooty · 08/02/2019 22:57

It's not a thing. Despite my crappy early Jan bday and DC late Dec bday it's not something we've done.
