Because nothing as as good as tea and toast at this time of night

However, it keeps me up at night and I've lost weight since stopping it.

Dinner at 5??? Why? Sounds very 1950s English, tea at 5 then supper before bed. Just finished our dinner.

PearlandRubies194 · 04/02/2019 21:09

I’ve grown up with having a supper before bed, so do most families I know and our children! I worked as a carer in residential homes for older people and we always brought the supper out before bedtimes (Ovaltine, Horlicks, Toast, biscuits or cereal). And tea was always served around 5pm.

Now, we have it around 6.30pm when we get home from after School Club/Work. I thought everyone had supper though!

My kids are at nursery and Afterschool daily til 6, eating at 5 simply not possible

Nothisispatrick · 04/02/2019 21:15

I’d be up peeing all night if I had tea after 8pm!

minipie · 04/02/2019 21:15

You could try having tea and toast at 5 and dinner later? Then you might find you want a smaller dinner

Bringbackthestripes · 04/02/2019 21:16

Pip and Nut chocolate orange almond butter

Omg I love pip and nut almond butter but I had no clue a choc orange one existed!

SinglePringle · 04/02/2019 21:17

Never had / have supper. I have lunch around 1pm and then a light dinner when I get home around 8pm / 8.30. No supper required.

BlimeyCalmDown · 04/02/2019 21:18

nettle & peppermint tea with ryvita or oatcakes having said that I really fancy toast now

TheBreastmilksOnMe · 04/02/2019 21:20

I’d just have a decaf tea and a couple of slices of toast from a really tiny loaf.

ZootSuit · 04/02/2019 21:20

OP I’m totally with you regarding having dinner at 5. I have breakfast at 7, lunch at 12 and dinner at 5 (sometimes go crazy and eat at 5.30). If I go outside the 5 hour gaps between meals I get so hungry!

Also tea and toast is probably one of the best combos ever invented, not helpful I know but if you enjoy it, have it!

Cozytoesandtoast00 · 04/02/2019 21:21

I've given up! (May have to change my user name!!)
Toast gives you a rise in blood sugar and it will drop overnight causing you to wake up.
Not good for sleep...
I do love it though!!

Mokepon · 04/02/2019 21:23

I do love threads like this.
People eat meals at different times Shock!!!

WomanWithAltitude · 04/02/2019 21:30

I think having dinner later is the key to not getting hungry again before bedtime. 5pm is very early.

CatFaceCats · 04/02/2019 21:42

@zootsuit, I’m the same! Up early with kids so early breakfast, I’m starving by 12, and kids are always hungry 5/5:30 so I cook for everyone then.
I love tea and toast before bed! Also quite partial to milk and digestives with dairylea on them....

MyGuideJools · 04/02/2019 21:42

I just have to have tea and toast when I wake up after a night shift, it's the best part of the day. I've tried to wean off it but nothing else will do! I now have those crustless wholemeal slices with real butter as they are abit smaller.

sorry op no help Grin

jjemimapuddleduck · 04/02/2019 21:42

Off to put the kettle on and cut some tiger bread for the toaster - thanks OP!

Bumblebee39 · 04/02/2019 21:58

I normally have a little something for supper. Tea and toast sounds perfect. I normally have a sandwich, toastie or a yoghurt, and a hot chocolate or coffee (decaf). Sometimes a bowl of porridge or cereal.

Bumblebee39 · 04/02/2019 21:59

A mug of hot Heinz tomato soup always goes down a treat too, with a little grated cheese and black pepper

HarrySnotter · 04/02/2019 22:01

Aw you've just taken me back decades. My mum used to make us tea and toast for supper every night before bed. Happy memories.

dellacucina · 04/02/2019 22:05

I love your tradition and I agree fully with those who suggest having lighter meals the rest of the day to facilitate this evening snack!

EngagedAgain · 04/02/2019 22:09

Actually I eat around 5pm. Not always done this used to be as late as 9 or after, but couldn't go back to that now. I go to bed earlier and don't like to on a full stomach. If you're going to have something, I don't see that tea and toast is any worse than other snacks. I tend to eat chocolate, not too much, or hot drink and biscuits, limit to 4 digestives.

sproutsandparsnips · 04/02/2019 22:10

Have a gin and tonic instead.

thenightsky · 04/02/2019 22:12

I have gin and tonic with a slice of toast (with far too much butter).

PeachRose · 04/02/2019 22:17

ChippyMinton
Redbush tea and a weetabix spread with butter and marmalade?

This sounds amazing👌
