Name Angus if not Scottish?

Hi struggling for a name for baby boy and love Angus but feel it’s just not right if neither of us are Scottish. Appreciate your thoughts... do you know any babies called Angus? Are any of them English?

Thanks so much 😊

I’d say it’s fine. I know lots of Angus’ but we are in Scotland. Also know lots of children called George with 2 Scottish parents, which I’d guess is a similar equivalent and nobody bats an eyelid! Angus is a lovely name.

It's fine but you will get questions on where the Scottish connection is. If my DP is out without me, he always gets asked about our children...He's English, I'm Scottish.

....and we're in England

I'm on the fence: from a name point of view I love it - I have an Angus and when we named his brother we found it really hard because no other name was quite as cool.

However. I'm Scottish and so felt it was appropriate to reflect that in my children's names. If I met another Angus I'd definitely ask about the Scottish connection, not to check out your credentials or anything, just assuming a mutual point of interest. If you can be bothered having that conversation lots of times then I highly recommend the excellent name :-)

I have a Gus and people often ask if it’s short for Angus. It isn’t; it’s just Gus. We have no Scottish connections, but that doesn’t seem to stop people assuming he’s an Angus.

I would assume Scottish connect ion. But then I'd assume Irish connection with a Ryan and Welsh with Owen.

But if parents said 'no connection we just liked the name' I'd think no more of it.

If itd the Gus name you like another option is Augusta

My nephew is Angus. We're English.
But he's named after Angus Young from AC/ DC

I have an Owen and have never been asked if there's a Welsh connection. There isn't (although dh's grandmother was Welsh) we just really liked the name. I don't see that just because we are English we have to stick to English names. What is an English name anyway? Lots of names originate in other countries and then get anglicised. I bet none of the Ancient Britons were called George or John.

I'm in Glasgow and don't know anyone called Angus. Call your baby whatever you like. Both my kids have names that I believe are more English than Scottish but I liked them and that's all that matters.

Great name, go for it. All you have to say is ‘no connection,we just loved the name’.
