Is it too early to turn on the washing machine?

Can I ask those of you in semi/terraces what time you think it’s acceptable to put a load of washing on in the morning? Im up at 6am every day but wait until 8am to put the machine on as to not disturb the neighbour (she has a school age dc so I guess she is up by 8am). Not sure what time is considerate on a weekend... opinions please?

I'm in a semi and would put a load on at 7am.

daphine2004 · 03/02/2019 07:31

I lived in a terraced at uni, plus flats and semis along the way. I’m an early bird and it wasn’t unusual to have my washing on the line by 7/8 am. I also would use the delay setting so it would be done by the time I wake up, which could be 6am, aonir would have been from 4/4.30.

I doubt your machine is that loud so as to disturb neighbours.

MyOtherProfile · 03/02/2019 07:31

Where is it? Can they definitely hear it? When we lived in a semi it was on the wall away from the join and I put it on as I went to bed. Never heard their machine.

icklekid · 03/02/2019 07:31

I'm in a semi and on a week day would put it on at 7.15 because that is when we leave for work. At a weekend would wait until 8 at the earliest

PristineCondition · 03/02/2019 07:31

Mine turns itself on at 5:30 to spin at 6 so I can put it out while the kettles boiling

PristineCondition · 03/02/2019 07:31

6:30 spin sorry

Sarcelle · 03/02/2019 07:33

8am.

Zoflorabore · 03/02/2019 07:33

I'm In a semi too but the kitchen is at the opposite side of the house to where we join. next door so I've never worried about the washing machine.
We have no neighbour joined to us on the side with the kitchen.

Next door have a stair lift as one of them is disabled. I've never heard a peep out of their house. Built in 1993 I've heard that newer homes are terrible for this but my experience has been the opposite.

I think 7.30 would be an acceptable time in your situation op.

I’ve never heard a neighbour’s washing machine! Unless it’s broken and really loud then I would assume it’s ok to run any time of day or night

SpeedyBojangles · 03/02/2019 07:34

I live in a semi and can hear a lot through the walls, but I've never heard their washing machine so I'd put it on!

HoraceCope · 03/02/2019 07:35

no, would definately put one on.

Farmerswifey12 · 03/02/2019 07:35

I live in a semi too but washing machine is at the other side of the house so I put it on early.

It wouldn't even occur to me that neighbours would be able to hear each other's washing machines!

JiltedJohnsJulie · 03/02/2019 07:35

I live on a semi and the kitchens are on the outer walls. I regularly set mine to start at 6 am so it's ready to hang up when I get up at 7 am. I've never heard the neighbours washing machine once.

user1493413286 · 03/02/2019 07:36

Can you hear it upstairs? In our semi detached I do it any time as ours isn’t against the shared wall and we can’t hear it upstairs so I can’t see that the neighbours can.
When we lived in a flat we put it on 6am weekdays and 8am weekends, again we weren’t on top or below anyone’s bedrooms

oldsewandsew · 03/02/2019 07:42

I wouldn’t put ours on until 8am, not because of the sound of the machine itself, but because the water coming from the tank is really noisy! I always feel guilty if DC are poorly and I have to put an emergency load on overnight, as the water tank is near their wall.

Somuchroom · 03/02/2019 08:39

Thanks for responses. Washing machine is in the kitchen, I’m not sure if she can actually hear it but I can hear hers in the evening when it spins and the walls are definitely paper thin. I am quite sensitive to noise however so judging from these replies I think I may be being a little over cautious. I’ve put it on and DH is still sleeping so maybe I think it’s louder than it actually is. 8am doesnt seem unreasonable to me now.

I'm an end terrace,my washing machine has been on for half an hour or so.Never occurred to me that there may be a time that's ''too early'' But then,I can't hear their machine next door anyway.

Lycanthropology · 03/02/2019 09:17

Maybe 8 - 8.30? Ask them when you next see them if they can hear or are disturbed by it.
When I lived in a terraced house if was so chunky and the bedrooms away from kitchen we never heard our neighbour's.
When in a flat once our neighbours kitchen was above our bedroom and she used to put her washing on when we were in bed. We had to have words!

You're very considerate, OP
