Making Am Dram theatre costumes, poss for kids.....

Know nothing! Good friend has corralled me 😊 into helping! I have no skin in this having eye rolling older teens, but I think it might be 'fun'.

I have a regular machine and an overlocker.

Tell me things.

Are most costumes recycled from previous? Made from scratch? Do you make them like a Moss Bros Best Man suit with lots of adjustability?

Would the Am Dram just dump a roll of fabric on you; or do you expect to measure the actors yourself?

Help!

I do it.
It depends on your involvement.

I make from scratch. A lot of chorus numbers as well as principals.
Sometimes it's altering costumes we already have.
Sometimes it's mending.
Sewing buttons on or braid on etc.

I love doing it as long as the current politics in the group isn't causing too much friction.

Best thing about costumes is they only have to look good from a distance and the inside sewing can be rubbish.

I love that the internals can be rubbish!

I was a purist til 3 years ago, my bestie's DD's wedding, prior day spent racing around with flowers, table settings etc. Finally, a drink on the patio... howls from within. Chief bridesmaid's dress (otherDD) did not fit at all. Dresses made by friend as present....

So I spent 5 hours deconstructing and reconstructing said dress. Finally, the innards were not pretty, but outwardly lovely.

Subsequently I made and wore dresses to works xmas do's that looked fine, but inwardly were held together on a wing and a prayer.

I'm made for theatre costuming, aren't I? 😂
