Chores from another time

I just swept out my real fire and laid it fir tonight like a Victorian servant. I wonder what a real Victorian servant would think as I sat in double glazed Central heated house bothering with a real fire because it looks pretty
What other chores are so old fashioned yet are done in the same way
I guess washing up, even though I have a dishwasher.

Scrubbing the step with a donkey stone.

Darning socks

I love doing the fire because it's something that doesn't change. Sweeping the front step & mopping the floor

Polishing anything - shoes, silver, furniture. Polish plus rag/brush plus elbow grease. Even the polish itself is much the same as it used to be.

Boiling cloths, hankies, nappies on the hob.

We have a fire for heating as well as cozyness, I think loads of people still have them. My 13 and 11 year old can and do lay and light the fire.

Getting logs in from the garage when it's dark, icy and minus 5 outside is the hated old fashioned task - everyone wants to lay and light the fire because there's skill and a bit of competition involved Grin

Washing the net curtains and scrubbing the step, using brasso on the knocker and letterbox on the door as I like them shiny

AviatorShades · 02/02/2019 11:41

Black leading the grate, polishing the front step with Cardinal Red polish
(both dim and distance memories of accompanying my mum to her grandmother's house where these were the weekly chores she did).
The Good Old Days,eh?

MouseUtopia · 02/02/2019 11:41

I love doing the fire as well because it's something that people have been doing since they first discovered it and it's an amazing connection to the past.

I like using a fountain pen.

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 02/02/2019 11:42

I just got the scum and limescale out of the kettle by boiling up lemon juice in it. I get limescale off the taps and stainless steel sink with half a lemon and salt, and clean the sinks with bicarbonate of soda and vinegar. And, after finally losing my patience with constantly smeary windows, I’m going to try the newspaper and vinegar method!

Taking a hem up/down on my kids school clothes. I always buy a size up and they last and last that way. Then making school trousers into shorts.

The throw away nature of fast clothes is dreadful.

modreB thanks, I never thought learning about donkey stones would be so much fun. Now I need to clean my plastic doorstep

The doorstep in that picture is just the same as mine. You can’t get donkey stones anymore so I have to use a stiff brush.
