F**k me - I seriously overestimated my abilities this eve

The kids were messing around this eve doing 'gymnastics' (they're 2 and 6) and I decided I would try a somersault.

I used to do them all the time but that was 40 years ago.

My head landed on the mat then my neck kind of caved in on itself. I feel quite lucky I didn't do myself permanent damage and probably need to face up to how pathetically fat and unfit I've become (recovering from cancer too which I imagine didn't help much)

Off to practice my cartwheels now 🙄

But where do we stand on gambols? Grin

meow1989 · 02/02/2019 11:02

I have never been able to cartwheels, hand stand or head stand even as a child Sad

eagleray · 02/02/2019 11:04

Well there's not much I can do if even the videos call it the wrong thing!

Hopefully everyone knows what I mean.

We don't have proper mats. Just an Ikea thing in the lounge with a couple of sun lounger cushions on top

I am actually stronger and springier at 33 than I was as a child. I was a bookish, indoorsy sort of child who couldn't cartwheel, handstand or get over the bloody pommel horse in PE.

I am too scared to try a cartwheel now but I can headstand and I'm working on my handstand!

Maybe I should try to find a pommel horse...

BitOutOfPractice · 02/02/2019 11:12

My friend had a fall last night demonstrating a pirouette. I didn't laugh. Oh no.

Tinty · 02/02/2019 11:18

Just stupidly read this and decided to do a Cartwheel, I Did It! Yay, Im 47 and haven't done one for years. I did realise afterwards that I should have warmed up first. Luckily I just stretched out my arm and rolled my shoulder around a bit and I am fine.

I am also amazed, after reading the rest of the stories on here I thought I would collapse in a crumpled heap.

Weird as I am the laziest being, I used to do a lot of exercise, gym, aerobics, running etc, but I haven't done anything in 5 years Blush.
Really ought to do something but there are not enough hours in the day. lazy

Tinty · 02/02/2019 11:19

I did however spend years and years of my life Cartwheeling as a child.

FurryDogMother · 02/02/2019 11:21

Last year, at age 58, I tried to twerk. I shan't be making that mistake again - am surprised I can still walk, tbh.

RedForShort · 02/02/2019 11:26

How weird. Not a gymnast but that video shows a forward roll not a somersault (didn't listen what country was it from?)

Forward roll / gambol = rolling over your head 360 on floor

Somersault = jumping up and turning around your head 360 in the air.

Fiona0x · 02/02/2019 11:29

I love the fact that you even tried it! Winning at parenting!

Fiona0x · 02/02/2019 11:31

Oh I thought you meant an actual somersault, not a forward roll! But you're definitely still winning at parenting 😊

ouchyoubiteybugger · 02/02/2019 11:34

I have form for this.
Tried to show my daughter how to front flip on the trampoline, landed on my neck snapped my trapeze thingy.
Tried to do superman on shopping trolley, fractured my wrist
Tried to show my daughter how to do a small ski jump, fractured my ankle and tore meniscus.
I'm pretty sure I still haven't learnt !
As I tried to do a hike with the dog and thought a jog on the snow would be fun, I fell down a hole cut my elbow, head and knee and had to limp 5 miles home !

Coloursthatweremyjoy · 02/02/2019 11:40

I had a go on my son's scooter at the skate park...it's not as easy as they make it look let me tell you. The scooter went one way I went the other bruising my hip, my elbow and most of al, my pride.

Kez0777 · 02/02/2019 11:42

I once when trampolining and attempted an actual somersault of the ground and in the air. I was shit at gymnasticswhen I was younger so fuck knows why I thought I could do one when I was nearly 40 Hmm
Landed on my neck and was in agony with whiplash for over a week Angry

Ollivander84 · 02/02/2019 11:44

I managed to herniate my disc so badly I needed emergency spinal surgery to stop me being paralysed. No idea how
I also broke my ankle and foot getting out of bed
I am NOT trying a cartwheel GrinGrinGrin

FreezerBird · 02/02/2019 11:57

My DD has a thing with her ears which means her balance is poor - however the flip side of this is that she doesn't get dizzy.

She made me go on a roundabout with her a couple of summers ago. The one in our local park is very smooth and very fast.

She hopped off and dashed happily off to the swings. I staggered, grey and sweaty, off to a bench where I stayed for some time, concentrating hard on not vomiting.

WeBuiltCisCityOnSexistRoles · 02/02/2019 12:06

I actually think this thread is really irresponsible Wink as I'm imagining lots of MNers reading it and trying to prove they can still do gymnastics. Chiropractors will have a busy February Grin

It's very timely though, just last week I attempted to "show" DCs how to do a tumble turn in the pool. Halfway through (so after about 10 minutes Grin) DD had to drag me to the side of pool Blush It seemed to last forever. In fact it's still happening in my head.

Sillybilly1234 · 02/02/2019 12:08

Head stand - ended up with saggy boobs in my face.

WhoGivesADamnForAFlakeyBandit · 02/02/2019 12:19
Did you look like this guy?
Frouby · 02/02/2019 12:25

I rode our baby pony for 5 mins last summer. Hauled my fat arse into the saddle from an upturned feed bucket, rode for 5 mins in a gentle walk.

Dismounted and nearly fell on my arse and felt every step for the next 2 days.

I used to vault from the ground onto big horses and canter them bareback across the field to get to the yard.

I struggled to get onto dpony from a fucking feed bucket. And shit myself walking around the top end of the school for 5 minutes.

Tillyscoutsmum · 02/02/2019 12:28

I tried to demonstrate my trampolining skills to my children. They've not been witnessed since circa 1988. Evidently, having 2 10lb babies means my pelvic floor is no longer suitable for trampolining. I didn't even get as far as a front somersault ShockBlush

tinofbeans · 02/02/2019 13:26

I am another to attempt to tumble turn. I misjudged the distance required and head butted the side of the pool BlushShock

FoofFighter · 02/02/2019 13:41

I threw my back out for a week by sitting down at a gig for 3 hours #winsoldgimmeraward

sofato5miles · 02/02/2019 13:51

My friend, in her 40s, was arguing with her sisters bout could do the better handstand at a boozy Christmas lunch.

Sister 1, up against the wall. Sister 2 against the wall, sister 3 ( my mate) took a little run up and went in to launch herself. Except she forgot to put down her arms so just landed on her head. Hurt her neck so off to A&E but nothing too serious.

I still cry laughing at that one.

DoctorTwo · 02/02/2019 14:57

Last summer playing football with DGD I decided to show her my Cruyff Turn, a move that left many a full back on his arse looking daft. I tapped the ball through my own legs and behind us both, turned to chase it and fell flat on my face, twisting my already fucked knee as I did. DGD, her mum and Gran all laughed their heads off.
