What painkillers did they give you post section?

My poor cousin discharged 24 hours after woth just paracetamol and ibuprofen. Is that standard? Shes climbing the walls.

yep just paracetamol for me - that was after csection under general anaesthetic too.

TickleMeEmo · 01/02/2019 11:12

Paracetamol and ibuprofen for me too, it does seem to be the standard given although I have heard of some people being given diclofenac instead of ibuprofen.

onlyjustmillenial · 01/02/2019 11:16

Yep, I had one shot of morphine post-c then just paracetamol.
Is she able to completely rest and have help with baby?

crazycatbaby · 01/02/2019 11:22

Diclofenic suppository the morning after (after I got out of bed and nearly passed out, they normally give you one in theatre). Oramorph, for a day I think. Then I can't remember. Nothing to take home though

Srilli · 01/02/2019 11:23

Same for me but my midwife phoned my GP for me when she came to see me the day after being discharged from hospital and demanded some codeine as I was in agony.

Billballbaggins · 01/02/2019 11:24

Discharged with paracetamol and ibuprofen. That’s what you get in hospital too unless you specifically ask for something stronger (oramorph in mine).

unlimiteddilutingjuice · 01/02/2019 11:24

Eek! That's awful.
I had diclofenac, codeine and paracetamol.

myothernameismyrealone · 01/02/2019 11:26

If the pain is not being managed by ibuprofen / paracetamol (which frankly is barely enough to take the edge off a headache and did piss all for my post section recoveries) then her midwife can call and request oramorph, but she does need to speak up for herself to get it. My midwife said codeine is not recommended when BF.

PonyPals · 01/02/2019 11:27

Just had a section and getting endo and oxy to stay ahead of the pain

FlurkenSchnit · 01/02/2019 11:32

I wasn't given anything when I was discharged they told me to get them myself, ended up sending my father to get some co-codamol. I have back issues and take ibuprofen and paracetamol regularly so they did nothing for the pain post c-section!
I was also given one dose of tramadol when I couldn't sleep when back on the ward with the catheter still attached and was written up for one more which the midwives then refused to give me Angry

herethereandeverywhere · 01/02/2019 11:33

Diclofenac. Went home with several weeks supply.

It's outrageous that on one hand women are constantly being warned off CS by being told it's 'major abdominal surgery' and on the other hand being expected to deal with the pain during recovery from said major abdominal surgery on only paracetamol and ibuprofen.

I bet a man wouldn't put up with this shit.

If her current meds are not dealing with the pain she must demand she is prescribed something else. Post birth is tricky enough without having to be a pain martyr.

SpunBodgeSquarepants · 01/02/2019 11:34

Diclofenac, paracetamol and codeine here too. That was five years ago but I think the NHS have got tight with handing out painkillers now though, I had an ERPC in November and was sent home with paracetamol which really didn't cut it.

Jenb2104 · 01/02/2019 11:36

I had dicolfenac for the first day whilst still in hospital but I wad told to just take paracetamol once home. I found the pain manageable though to be honest.

whatswithtodaytoday · 01/02/2019 11:37

It is ridiculous, but I think the issue is that most painkillers can't be taken while breastfeeding. They assume you'll be breastfeeding so don't give the decent drugs.

I'll be in this situation in three weeks and have no idea what to do.

noblegiraffe · 01/02/2019 11:39

Diclofenic and paracetamol for my EMCS which I needed badly for over a week (I knew when the time for the next dose was as the pain was getting really bad, they told I’d know when I didn’t need it anymore as I’d forget to take it).

With an ELCS, just paracetamol, and nothing after a day or so because I was fine. Totally different experiences.

She needs to ask.

shirleyschmidt · 01/02/2019 11:39

I had morphine shortly after (born early hours) and might have had one more later that night. Discharged the next day with paracetamol and ibuprofen. So it was standard in my case, and I had a horrendous constant cough at the time - that was fun!

mummyhaschangedhername · 01/02/2019 11:40

Nothing both times. I did take co-comadol the first time as i did struggle, I had twins and was in a week and on the third day a midwife went absolutely crazy at me and said that women are usually home now (I was in as twin had complications) and a take nothing, she demanded I went for a walk and she said she would watch the twins, I walked around, cried, called my husband and told him to being me painkiller the next day. Went back in the ward to hear both babies screaming and no one there. Never asked again.

The last section I just wanted out so I just kept moving and asking to leave, so they let me out the next day. I didn't take many that time, but it was easier as I hadn't had the complications of the first (I had had surgery during the pregnancy too) and there was only one baby to look after.

Tablet Morphine for 48 hours then paracetamol and ibroprufen. I was in hospital for 4 days and I could request liquid morphine but after 72 hours it didn’t help my pain, just made me feel odd so I didn’t like it

PencereTencere · 01/02/2019 11:42

My hospital didn't provide any pain relief once you were off of morphine, so it was completely up to you to acquire some.

I had paracetamol and ibuprofen to start with, then switched the paracetamol for cocodamol (wasn't breastfeeding) once I realised I needed something with a bit more power.

Morgan12 · 01/02/2019 11:43

Yep standard. Make sure she is taking something for trapped wind. I took loads of windeze. It's unreal how sore trapped wind is.

meow1989 · 01/02/2019 11:44

One dose of morphine immediately after then paracetamol and brufen. No issues

Oblomov19 · 01/02/2019 11:44

I had them all! Diclofenac was my fave.

Oblomov19 · 01/02/2019 11:45

"most painkillers can't be taken while breastfeeding. " ShockShock

Well. That's not true.

PolarBearDisguisedAsAPenguin · 01/02/2019 11:46

I was discharged after 36 hours with just paracetamol all three times. It’s standard to be given painkillers during the operation though that continue working for a while afterwards.

Chocolatecoffeeaddict · 01/02/2019 11:47

Paracetamol and morphine. I've had four and with my last 2 I had to ask to stay in an extra night as they wanted to discharge me after 24 hours but I was crying in agony. I found the pain worse the day after the section but then got considerably better. They gave me strong painkillers to take home but can't remember what they were.
