My poor cousin discharged 24 hours after woth just paracetamol and ibuprofen. Is that standard? Shes climbing the walls.

Yep standard. Or at least it was until I made a formal complaint. I was told to discharge myself and see my GP!

I can’t imagine in any other major abdominal surgery that you would have a packet of ibuprofen and paracatmol Chuck at you and told to get on with it.

ThursdayLastWeek · 01/02/2019 15:55

My GP was happy to prescribe me codeine (and senakot!) after I was sent home with paracetamol and ibuprofen.

Over the phone, so it might be worth your cousin calling her surgery.

LeSquigh · 01/02/2019 15:59

I have posted about this before. I was given paracetamol and ibuprofen and was utterly disgusted by this, I had taken stronger stuff whilst pregnant (on prescription). I had to rely on a family members codeine prescription until I could get to the GP. It is completely unacceptable and I made my feelings very clear about this.

I had a MMC in the months before that pregnancy too and had to have medication to pass it. I was given codeine then and that was much less painful. I wasn’t breastfeeding at all and I knew this.

It doesn’t happen to men because a family member had a hernia op shortly after my section and he was given proper painkillers.

Theweasleytwins · 01/02/2019 16:08

Emcs and had 5 days of diclafenic (not really an emergency though, just 13 days late but no baby distress) and paracetamol

EyUpOurKid · 01/02/2019 16:10

I was sent home with the preloaded injections (clexane?) paracetamol and a box of dyhydracodeine. I did self discharge 24 hours post section though, not against medical advice but not recommended.

maras2 · 01/02/2019 16:11

My kids were born by LSCS in the 1970's.
A 10 day stay followed and for 5 of those regular injections of opioid analgesics were given.
The oral drug of choice in those days was 'Distalgesic' tablets.
They were a compound of Paracetamol and Dextromoromide and were just as potent as the opiates.
Babies were kept in the nursery (as mums were too stoned needed their rest )and brought out for feeds and visitors. Shock
Not sure which system was better but at the time it felt like being in a permanent fog, albeit a pleasant one.
Oh, just remembered we had sleeping tablets at night, either Mogadon or Temazepam which was relatively new.

Haworthia · 01/02/2019 16:11

I had IV paracetamol when the epidural wore off, and then paracetamol and ibuprofen after that. It was sufficient for me, but everyone’s different.

welshweasel · 01/02/2019 16:14

Discharged after 24 hours with no painkillers at all. Told to go to the supermarket on the way home to get some. Luckily I had a bottle of oramorph at home from a previous problem so took that for a couple of days, otherwise I genuinely believe I’d have ended up back at the hospital. Was off painkillers completely within a few days but definitely needed more than over the counter stuff initially.

It’s barbaric really, I do much smaller operations on people via keyhole surgery and send them home with paracetamol, ibuprofen and codeine as standard!

KeptTheBeachesShipwreckFree · 01/02/2019 16:17

Paracetamol, 3x days' worth of 30mg codeine and some diclofenac. They also gave me some pre-filled syringes of something to prevent blood clots that I had to inject into my abdomen every day for a week.

LiquoricePickle · 01/02/2019 16:32

I had nothing after 24 hours. I was fine. I did pass out when I stood up, but my husband caught me and we just tried again. Sorry that she's suffering though - her GP should be able to prescribe something to help. You can reassure her that she'll feel much better soon!

LadyandGent · 01/02/2019 16:35

Paracetamol *crys and eventually pethidine (and then fainted and fell not while out having a cigarette ). They couldn't give me the good drugs because I'm asthmatic and was breastfeeding.
All the other women on the ward got Difene. No idea what that is, but I never got it.

Lauren83 · 01/02/2019 16:42

They messed up and gave me nothing on the ward, and then I had codeine for home but I didn't take it, had paracetamol and ibuprofen instead

Racheyg · 01/02/2019 17:01

Emcs in 2013
Elcs in 2015

Out within 24 hours and paracetamol and Ibroufen both times.

flippyflapper · 01/02/2019 17:03

Yes i had the same after twins and i was crying in pain. Doctor came out to me and gave me painkillers that worked. But funny enough out of all my friends etc im the only one who was, everyone else got better painkillers

megletthesecond · 01/02/2019 17:04

Diclofenac and a couple of oral morphine tablets.
Needed the diclofenac and paracetamol for about a month.
Another example of poor treatment of women. Major operation and chucked out within a couple of days Angry. (Can you tell I'm still angry 12 years on Blush).

IslaMann · 01/02/2019 17:31

Paracetamol and ibuprofen were more than adequate after my section. It honestly felt like I'd done a few too many sit ups, that's all, despite me having a tubal ligation and division of adhesions at the same time. But everyone's pain levels are different so if she needs more she needs to ask for it.

Ollivander84 · 01/02/2019 17:48

@welshweasel nothing for me after spinal surgery (cauda equina, 5hr op). I took my own paracetamol in case the nurses were busy. Ended up having one codeine at 3am after my op. Woke up from GA at 4pm, discharged 1pm the next day

BowBeau · 01/02/2019 17:51

Just paracetamol. I was bf so couldn’t take the other stuff.

HumphreyCobblers · 01/02/2019 17:53

I had such a varying experience with how much pain I suffered after my three sections. One was fine on ibruprofen and paracetamol, the other two I needs stronger meds. It annoyed me that I was given them on my first but had to argue for them on my third.

Firsttimer16 · 01/02/2019 18:00

Only paracetamol and ibuprofen here too and I found it excruciating. Also fainted on standing due to pain. Wouldn’t give me anything stronger despite begging! Makes me so nervous for another one.

LittleMissWeary · 01/02/2019 18:04

I had morphine for a couple of days after my son. But he was a forceps caesarian so I was pulled about quite a bit.

With my dd, which was a standard caesarian I came home with dihydrocodeine.

Girliefriendlikesflowers · 01/02/2019 18:13

My dd is nearly 13yo and I had an emcs, I was in a lot of pain after the op it felt like someone was holding a scalding hot iron on my stomach. I had one morphine injection, and took high dose of codeine, paracetamol, diclofenac religiously for 3-4 days post op. I would say I have a fairly normal pain threshold.

Paracetamol and ibruphen is inadequate for major abdominal surgery 😬

Secretlemonadehater · 01/02/2019 18:25

C-section last week; discharged 26 hours after surgery, sent home with nothing, told to take supermarket paracetamol (1g every 6 hours) and ibuprofen (200g every 4 hours) and to ring my gp if it wasn’t suffice.

Weetabixandshreddies · 01/02/2019 18:28

1 voltarol suppository and then paracetamol and ibuprofen.

FaFoutis · 01/02/2019 18:30

Morphine for a day, then paracetamol & ibuprofen. I found it enough.
