Cold weather and Teens - What's yours wearing?

Got mine to concede that a hoodie and denim jacket was necessary and appropriate given the sub-zeroness of the temperature.

I'm calling that a parenting win Grin

Mine has gone to school with a t shirt under his school shirt and blazer. When asked if he had his coat (which is a jacket he picked and likes) he said it’s in his bag 🙄

zod1ac19 · 01/02/2019 09:19

Yes yours is definitely a parenting win btw OP Smile

Daisiesinavase · 01/02/2019 09:21

Skiing jacket, hat with furry earflaps, no gloves!

Canshopwillshop · 01/02/2019 09:24

It’s mufti day for my 14 yr old DD and she attempted to go out in just leggings, sweatshirt and scarf. I managed to get her to wear a light waterproof coat (God forbid she should wear her gorgeous puffer coat) but she then ditched the scarf - lots of eye rolling!

cragfastsheep · 01/02/2019 09:27

Had a huge row with mine this morning as she refused to wear snow boots to school even though there's a lot of snow so walked out slamming the door wearing trousers that are too short (she lost the long ones I bought), suede trainers, the school fleece which isn't warm, no hat and no gloves even though I pleaded with her. Utterly fed up with her attitude every morning (snow or no snow), and I'm sure it'll be my fault if she has wet feet and freezes all day.

hallamoo · 01/02/2019 09:37

My teens are adequately dressed, although not wearing hats. The 8 year old has gone to school in shorts!

Canshopwillshop · 01/02/2019 09:42

@hallamoo - my DS used to be the same - shorts all year round regardless! He’s in Year 7 now and v miffed that he’s not allowed to wear them any more.

TwoGinScentedTears · 01/02/2019 09:45

Me (at 6:50): it's really cold out

Ds: yeah. I've got a thermal vest on

Me: any chance you'll wear your coat?

Ds: ha ha ha ha.

Me: gloves? A scarf?

Ds: ha ha ha ha ha.

That's a no then.

TheFifthKey · 01/02/2019 09:47

I keep seeing this on MN and it bears no resemblance to what I see working in a 6th Form college and also seeing lots of school children walking to school. They all wear pretty decent coats and proper shoes in cold weather - hats are fashionable so a fair few of them, but rather fewer scarves and gloves. But they're not shivering.

GlowWine · 01/02/2019 09:48

Wow, well done op!
I've given up long ago. It's a 'fight' I can't win if I care about her mental health. She's gone to school in her uniform polo shirt and sweater. She's done this through the heatwave last summer and when we have extended periods of sub-zero temps. Just occasionally she'll relent on non-school days and wear some type of coat if it's bucketing down or snowing... So far she's not died of pneumonia nor has many colds.

BertrandRussell · 01/02/2019 09:48

I remember a conversation with my dd some years ago going out on a freezing night
“It’s so cold-surely you’re going to wear more than that!”
“Don’t worry, Mum-i’ve got my furry headband in my bag for later”

grauduroi · 01/02/2019 09:49

Mine's sick, so finally persuaded him into a lovely puffer jacket of his choosing. His comment at the end of school 'hey mum i like being not cold!' Shock

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 01/02/2019 09:50

As someone once said, you know you're properly grown up when you wrap up warm without your mother telling you to.

Disfordarkchocolate · 01/02/2019 09:53

Teenage son has polo shirt and school sweatshirt. Luckily he only has a five minute walk. Coat and gloves were mentioned a lot before he left, he just rolled his eyes.

Daytimetellysucks · 01/02/2019 10:01

The 13 year old put tights on and a sweatshirt under her blazer this morning - moaned incessantly that the tights were itchy

The 17 year old is wearing jeans, boots and a coat. Since she started in 6th form, the coat weirdness has stopped

Fluffyears · 01/02/2019 10:02

@cragfastsheep don’t get into it with her. Let her be cold it won’t kill her and she’ll be miserable of her own making.

dancemom · 01/02/2019 10:05

dd is wearing her school skirt and shirt, jumper, tights, wool blazer and heavy winter coat along with her uggs

tried to suggest hat and scarf but happy she at least left with gloves - although they were in her pocket!

Gedge77 · 01/02/2019 10:08

My ds yr9 says most kids at his school wear proper coats to school. He wears a coat and gloves so i am a bit puzzled by all other schools being so different.

dingit · 01/02/2019 10:29

Ds 17 appears to be all grown up then. Out the door in a coat without asking. Mind you he wasn't going to get out of bed, declaring the dusting of snow a snow day. Dh drove him to college 🙄

PepsiLola · 01/02/2019 10:38

Is this really a thing? (My kids are 5 and 2 so not there yet)

I was commenting to DH yesterday about the amount of kids who have no coats or or open jackets! Why would you do that to yourself?

Oh and one girl had bare legs, he legs were bright red from snow and wind. I felt the sting just looking at her

TyneTeas · 01/02/2019 10:40

Flowers for those having hard times.

This is a battle I tend to step away from if I don't win it at minor skirmish level. I am prepared for a teen to experience the consequences of this kind of judgement, whereas with a toddler I would feel a greater responsibility to get them appropriately dressed

ChanklyBore · 01/02/2019 10:42

Mine wore shorts yesterday. Polo shirt, hoodie, coat, hat gloves, good shoes. And shorts.

Apparently it was fine.

MrsIronfoundersson · 01/02/2019 10:45

Gedge- mine too, we bought a puffa jacket last weekend after he said everybody in his school (year 9 upwards) wears them! DD is like me and likes as many layers as possible, plus hat, gloves, scarf and hood.

kelper · 01/02/2019 10:48

Mine wears rigger gloves..... He did put his waterproof coat on this morning because it was raining (No snow here) but even if its raining come home time he won't wear it home 🙄
I don't bother arguing, he doesn't complain he's cold!

Fluffycloudland77 · 01/02/2019 10:50

Secondary school kids walk past our house in the morning. Winter they wear thin shirts, blazer.

In last years heatwave I saw one wearing a hoody. It makes no sense.
