Cold weather and Teens - What's yours wearing?

TyneTeas · 01/02/2019 09:16

Got mine to concede that a hoodie and denim jacket was necessary and appropriate given the sub-zeroness of the temperature.

I'm calling that a parenting win Grin

One has a school shirt and blazer, is wearing gloves so im taking that as a win

The other has gone to college in sports leggings with bare ankles and a massive puffer jacket with a furry hood and gloves....no im not sure if that constitutes a win

Fuck it...im taking it

Win win

Reythelastjedi · 01/02/2019 10:53

Mine put trainers on as she has new school shoes and doesn't want to ruin them. She also has a coat but no gloves or hat. I pick my battles.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 01/02/2019 10:54

I wrestled mine into a coat this morning. I’m sure it’s safely stuffed into the bottom of his locker.

In the end I told him that he had to wear it to school then 9-3 I didn’t care if he ran around bare chested through the snow wearing only his pants as long as the coat came home again.

He seemed happy with that compromise.

suckonthatmaureen · 01/02/2019 10:59

Most kids round here wear coats. Unfortunately fashion here is for massively expensive coats. 🙄 So expensive one local school has banned certain labels.

My DC's are still at primary school, and are not into labels yet. But I don't know what's worse, freezing teenagers or being asked to buy a 14 year old a moncler coat. Confused

LikeACowsOpinion · 01/02/2019 11:01

It's strange.

I remember as a teen, never really feeling the cold and staying out till all hours sitting in parks/fields with no coat.
I certainly never wore a coat over my blazer.
Now if I so much as stand too close to a window without enough layers on I'm frozen for the rest of the day.

Saying that, the lack of feeling cold was probably helped by the vodka Blush

Anyway, the teens I see at our local high school are all bundled up in huge puffer jackets but not much else.
I saw one girl in a Canada Goose coat but wearing a skirt with bare legs. She must've been frozen!

LikeACowsOpinion · 01/02/2019 11:02

@suckonthatmaureen exactly the same where I am.
Moncler and Canada Goose coats are the norm.

shecamefromgreece · 01/02/2019 11:03

Me-" it's freezing this morning"
Dd-" yes it is"
Me- "make sure you wear your coat"
Dd- "I will"
Me-"gloves?"
Dd-"no I don't where they are"
Me-"I've got black ones here?"
Dd-" no thanks"
As she leaves the house wearing only her blazer
Me-"dd your coat"
Dd"yes I've got it"
Me- "where?"
Dd" in my bag"
Me- "its -5 with snow and ice on the ground put the coat on your body before you leave the house!!"
Dd- "for gods sake mum you're just so awkward why are you always on my case......"

Tell me it gets better soon please?.....

brizzledrizzle · 01/02/2019 11:07

Hat, scarf and gloves plus a rab coat, all worn voluntarily ShockGrin

MeetJoeTurquoise · 01/02/2019 11:30

Mine's got a hoody AND his puffa jacket on over his T-shirt. No hat, scarf or gloves though so I'll take that as a win too.

cragfastsheep · 01/02/2019 12:29

@Fluffyyears she phoned to say sorry from school - that's a first!

QueenofallIsee · 01/02/2019 12:35

I bought our tribe (blended family of 7 kids) ruinously expensive coats at Christmas in an effort to not see them dithering with cold Hmm. It worked even though I was considerably poorer and they are all wearing hugely oversized Adidas/north face/parka/ puffy coats cos it’s the thing! This morning I had the pleasure of seeing them properly wrapped up warm

halfwitpicker · 01/02/2019 12:40

When I was at school (20 years ago) I was regularly in a short skirt, no tights, just a blazer, no coat. Freezing Lancashire winter, lashing it down all the time, bring it on

muchprefersummer · 01/02/2019 12:45

Mine isn't a teen yet, only 11, but has insisted it's still 'shorts' for him. He does still wear his big coat though.

MrsScrubbingbrush · 01/02/2019 12:53

I must have very weird kids - they both went off in full school uniform (including blazer), tights, hats, scarves, puffacoats and gloves- although DD1's are fingerless so she can still access her phone🙄

Rubusfruticosus · 01/02/2019 13:09

School- trousers, shirt, blazer, coat
Weekend- jeans, t-shirt, lightweight fleece, gilet, sometimes a hat
Doesn't wear- thermal t-shirt, school jumper, gloves

BigusBumus · 01/02/2019 13:19

DS1 (16) has a North Face puffa over his uniform, DS2 (16) has a Stone Island Puffa over his uniform. DS3 (12) is shivering in his uniform only. Mind you, I take them to school in the car every day, so apart from playing rugby and walking between different blocks at school they're not outside much.

Doyouthinktheysaurus · 01/02/2019 14:02

Ds1 (16) wore his shirt and blazer, no coat. His bag does weigh a ton and he has no locker so I do kind of get his reluctance.

Ds2 (14) did wear a coat, probably the 3rd time this winter.

Yesterday was colder and I did give them both a lift as they started at different times. Currently hiring the worlds smallest car though and can't get them both in at the same time. Fiat 500's are not designed to accommodate lanky teenagers in the back seat😂

Witchend · 01/02/2019 14:14

1: Pyjamas, and duvet still.

  1. Pyjamas, onesie and woollie hat
  2. shorts and t-shirt

Stupomax · 01/02/2019 14:24

15 year old - very sensible, wears a ski jacket, hat and ski gloves, snow boots.

13 year old - a sweatshirt, jeans and some Vans sneakers.

It's currently -14C.

caperplips · 01/02/2019 15:00

13yr old went in wearing only her school uniform despite wrapping herself up in her school jacket in the car on the way in. Refused to take the jacket with her.

I was in a meeting and came out to find 6 missed calls from her (phone on silent for meeting) - turns out she needed her jacket for an out of school trip. I was too far away to get it to her in time so she missed the trip. This WILL be my fault of course [mmm]

TyneTeas · 01/02/2019 17:06

Returned home sans hoodie, which was loaned to an underdressed friend.

Mirali · 01/02/2019 17:10

One of mine wore their coat over their blazer and jumper, one didn't. Both wore gloves. The one who didn't whatsapped that it was nippy on the walk to school.

TinselAngel · 01/02/2019 17:27

DD ended up waiting at the freezing bus stop for an extended period last week, with no coat on, after the school bus didn't turn up. I got anguished texts about how freezing she was, how she couldn't feel her fingers etc.

That evening I asked if she had taken away the lesson from this that it is wise to wear a coat in case such things occur?

Answer "No, a coat wouldn't make any difference, I'd still be cold"

Adversecamber22 · 01/02/2019 17:32

A hoodie and a coat ! I managed to persuade him to wear gloves. I got some that you can still use your phone through the ends of the gloves. It was minus 5 yesterday and he has a longigh walk to and from train station to get to college.

TyneTeas · 01/02/2019 18:59

To be fair both while were taken, only one was actually worn Grin
