My DD2 and her Boyfriend are stranded

StillMedusa · 31/01/2019 22:32

Somewhere in Devon, in the blizzard, trying to get back to Oxfordshire.
They went to visit DD1 who is spending her birthday inpatient in her own hospital (she's a doc) with a huge relapse of anorexia.

Boyfriend is a type 1 diabetic. They have blankets and a shovel and I think, snacks but it's not good.

They are somewhere near Dunsford/Teign I believe. Does anyone know of any airbnbs/pubs/places they could get to for the night?

Bumping for you

Ethel80 · 31/01/2019 22:45

They'd be better off trying to make contact with services down there and explaining his health situation. Does he have insulin with him?

LemonySippet · 31/01/2019 22:46

Dunsford is a tiny village in the middle of nowhere, is that really where you mean? Are they on the A38?

effiehabb · 31/01/2019 23:00

Bumping

whiteworld · 31/01/2019 23:01

Don’t they have phones with them?

tinstar · 31/01/2019 23:04

Agree with Ethel - they need local advice. I know someone who's been stuck on the A30 in Cornwall and there's advice in the radio, twitter etc to stay put until help arrives.

Hopefully they've been sensible in view of the weather forecasts and made sure they have blankets, drinks, food etc with them.

Worrying for you I know.

HouseyMcHouseFace · 31/01/2019 23:08

Do you know whereabouts? If they’re on A30 near me (village on A30 not far from
Dunsford) they should be ok. Looking out the window now and traffic is moving alright. On the back lanes or if they’re on the moor though they should call for help.
Loads of people out ion tractors rescuing.

HouseyMcHouseFace · 31/01/2019 23:10

Pm me if they’re near Dunsford. I can find someone to fetch them.

phpolly · 31/01/2019 23:11

BBC coverage of Devon traffic / snow, with live updates

Pm me if they’re near Dunsford. I can find someone to fetch them.

They need to be contacting emergency services if her boyfriend's diabetes is a concern, if not then they probably need to tune into local BBC radio and follow advice. The last thing needed is more people heading out and potentially getting into bother in the bad weather putting further strain on what will already be a stretched emergency service. Did they ignore the weather warning for the SW? It's been there all week. Also not everyone on the Internet is who they say they are.

Nameisthegame · 31/01/2019 23:19

Bumping hope they find somewhere safe and warm x

dadshere · 31/01/2019 23:20

Hoping that they get out of there soon. If they can get to a house, ANY house, get out and knock on the door. DH is from that area, and they are the kindest people in the UK. they will help them! Reach out. good luck

HouseyMcHouseFace · 31/01/2019 23:25

nerrsnerr you’re right, probably a foolish offer and even more foolish if op takes me up on it! But my dbro is out atm fetching people that decided to take a shortcut across the moors despite the weather advice. But yeah, get them to call 111, it’s the police that are organising all the local rescues.

ineedaholidaynow · 31/01/2019 23:28

I'm in Devon but not the same part. There are loads of posts on Facebook of places offering shelter for those stuck in the snow eg village halls, YHA and pubs.

There are also people with 4x4s, tractors helping transport people.

Mountain rescue/other emergency services are trying to check up on people stranded in their cars

I hope they can get help

Fiddie · 31/01/2019 23:35

I think that's a lovely offer Housey.

How's it going op? Are they still stuck?

Cyclebird · 31/01/2019 23:38

Royal Oak is the pub in Dunsford, think it has rooms. Telephone number is 01647 252256. Sounds like they're in the Teign valley somewhere. There are other pubs and B&Bs in that area. Hope you hear some positive news soon.

StillMedusa · 01/02/2019 00:04

It looks like they are moving again..albeit very slowly. DD2 just texted me.
But thank you Housey for the offer. The BF is a lovely chap whose diabetes has never been brilliantly controlled (this time last year we ended up 2 hours from home in an ambulance when he lost consciousness!) so we are a bit twitchy about it! Apparently they have snacks so even if he doesn't have his insulin he should get by for a while.

I did tell them to stay in Plymouth but all 24 year olds know better than their mother....

It's snowing here now in Oxfordshire so I suspect they are going to have ea very very long drive home...
